I'm in China and still have a few more months. I've been working at an EF adult center in Tianjin for two years. I've had a great experience with EF. They have been very professional and honest.

I'm thinking of going to Indonesia next and see that EF have opened their own schools there now. There are two EF-owned schools in Jakarta. One at Taman Anggrek and the other Sudirman.

Can anyone give me an idea of which one is in the better area to live and also is 15 million rupiah a decent amount to live on?

I personally can't speak to working at EF Indonesia (lord knows there are about a million posts about that here) but the areas are nice (sudirman and taman anggrek). 15 million rupiah is plenty of money and assuming you have some minor money saving ability you will be able to save 5-7 grand a year.

Oh okay thanks. I was thinking 15 million would be enough.

Good to hear they are both nice areas. I'm maybe leaning more towards Sudirman as it looks more central.

The information on here is about working at franchise schools in Indonesia, and it seems clear they can be less than outstanding. However, these two new schools are EF owned and operated which is a first for Indonesia. I have been told they will be like the ones here in a China.

Having worked for them in China, I can't really speak highly enough of them. They pay well for about 22 hours of teaching and also completely cover the cost of further qualifications. I got my Dip. TESOL without paying a cent.

Also, any idea how much an apartment will cost per month around Sudirman?

Apartments are expensive in the business area of Jakarta. The cheapest ones that I know of are Taman Sari, Sudirman Park and Taman Rasuna.

I'm not really that up on the prices these days, but I think you'd be lucky to find anything below 5 million plus you'd have utilities to pay as well. That's a fair chunk of your salary already gone. Also, they often want at least 6 months rent upfront although if you pay for a year you may get a reduction on the rent.

An alternative would be to live outside the business district and commute although, as you may know, traffic in Jakarta is horrendous and public transport is poor. Failing that, there are literally hundreds of boarding houses in the area (called Kosts or Kos-kosan) which range from under 1 million for a box room with a fan and shared bathroom up to 6 million for an en-suite room which resembles a 5-star hotel bedroom. They don't suit everyone - lack of space, privacy and own cooking facilities can be a problem for some - but they're good to stay in when you first arrive as you can pay monthly until you decide where you want to go.

Incidentally, are you sure that EF don't provide housing? I know the other EFs are franchised but they all provide shared housing. Admittedly, it's not usually of a particularly high standard or in the most salubrious of areas, plus you have the attendant problems of house-sharing but, again, it's somewhere to stay until you sort yourself out.

Hi Tudor, thanks so much for your reply. I am pretty certain that EF-owned schools don't provide housing. They do put you up in a hotel for the first 3 weeks, I think, so that should take some of the immeadiate pressure off.

How about the area around the Taman Anggrek mall? West Jakarta, I think?

Is that any cheaper?

The Mediterania apartments near Taman Angrek mall are pretty reasonably priced, as Jakarta goes. A pokey but serviceable 2 bed will cost in the region of 30 million a year. The facilities there are good and you'll have plenty in the vicinity to keep you occupied.

The only drawback is you'll probably have to pay for the year up front. Most schools who don't provide housing will give you a loan to get an apartment, so make sure you ask about it if and when you take the job.

Good luck.

15 mil a month.....maybe enough-but certainly not plenty......but then it depends on your lifestyle I suppose-a decent night out in Jakarta is going to set you back around a mil for food drink in Kemang...or at least it does with my drinking habits! Say once a week-there goes 4 mil. Another 3-4 mil on a modest apartment. Just remember that the utilities in those apartments are often sky high....

Personally, I would avoid renting a high end apartment as the utility costs are usually much higher than if you rent a house, and look for an area close to te school with cheaper accommodation, unless you want to spend a big chunk of your salary.

Jakarta is quite a deceiving city, when it comes to determining living costs. A few years ago a friend of mine accepted 18 jt a month in a suburb in the South of the city. Sounds great....right.

Basically, he had to start work early, so the option of commuting was out, and discovered the 'cheapest' accommodation in the area (an unfurnished house) was 50- 60 jt a year.

A Nasi Goreng in the nearest mall was 40.000, and at night there wasn't much public transport, so a taxi to the center of the city was almost 0.000 for a one way journey, just to find any affordable entertainment.

So, when you are accepting a job offer, check out the area first, the living costs and the traffic situation, as usually higher salaries are offered in areas were your living costs can really eat into your salary.

Sometimes its better to accept a couple of million less, in a more affordable area.

Sudirman has a train station. Where exactly is the EF centre there? FX or something? You could always live on another suburb on the same train line and use the commuter train (which isn't that bad, everyone, before you all start grumbling). Especially because EF hours aren't office hours - trains will be empty around the middle of the day when you're going off to work.

There are plenty of other places to work too, though EF is probably one of the cruisier places. Wall Street pays better, but it seems they work you harder.

Sudirman station to FX is about 3km so that would involve a bus journey on top of the train ride. Your point about EF's hours is pertinent, however due to the MRT construction, traffic on Sudirman is almost at a stand-still now during the day. I travel to work via Sudirman - using public transport - and my journey time has more than doubled since the construction began. Even the busway gets caught up in the traffic.

In short, although Jakarta's public transport is poor, it does get you from A to B albeit slowly and uncomfortably.

I'm bumping this thread as it's a couple of years old, and I'm interested to know what it's like working for the EF adult schools in 2017.

I'm a NES with the EF setup in China, and thinking about a transfer this year. Is the working environment much the same as in China? What kind of attitude or behaviours do adult students have in Indonesia? Are the local staff friendly or keep distant from foreign teachers?

In terms of pay, the EF website mentions 11m to 14m is the starting wage, and that there is shared housing provided; is this accurate, and is it possible to get a housing allowance instead of using the provided accomodation?

Do they handle all the paperwork and get the KITAS fairly timely, or is it a long process?

What are the prospects for promotion and development at EF Indonesia? Do they still offer the Cert, Dip and other qualifications?

Also, are the adult centres only located in Jakarta and surrounding areas, or in other parts of the country?

I realise that's a lot of questions, but if anyone can give an update, or summarise their recent/ongoing experience there, I'd be very grateful. I haven't found much recent information through google so far, and the EF website doesn't go into much detail.

It's been a while for me but what I can tell you is you will love the students. Attitudes and behaviors are among the best I've encountered. The staff are generally really lovely and will socialise.

I had friends do the Dip TESOL but they had to contribute. This was at a franchise so a good question to ask at interview. Funnily enough, you may, as my friends did, need to come back to China to do the teaching practice for the diploma.

I took a housing allowance rather than accommodation but this was not enough to cover the entire cost. Another question for interview, but I would suspect you will need to contribute out of your salary on top of anything you're offered.

There was talk of Adult schools opening up at franchises in other cities when I left. I don't know if they ever did. There could be opportunities to work in small corporate departments at EF franchises in other parts of the country but competition is high, because it's a good little number. These franchises when I left focused on kids, so you would have to do your time and find a way into the corporate side.

Personally, I would stick with the EF owned schools because finding a good franchise could prove problematic, although I do know of a fairly good one. Avoid Swara at all costs because I have had an issue with them and they are infamous on this board. That said, perhaps they've changed. More recent teachers would need to confirm this.

As it has been a while, hopefully someone with more recent experience can fill you in about the situation today.
