I'm from Singapore and am planning to go to Saigon next month to do my TEFL (the 120-hour in class course). Has anyone heard of Compass education (compass.edu.vn/en)? I visited them back in May and was satisfied with their staff and their in-depth responses to my queries.
My plan after the course is to travel up to Hanoi to look for teaching placements. Ideally, I would want to manage kids or teenagers before I move on to anything above high school. Is it realistic for me to expect a 1-year contract from my potential employers? Salary wise, if I'm looking to work from Mon-Fri, how much should I expect to get paid?
Also, I'm pretty concerned about the new work permit legislation. I have no prior teaching experience whatsoever but I do have a degree in marketing from RMIT. Is this really a huge deterrent for people like me? |

Are you a singaporian citizen? I ask because you said you're from Singapore.
It appears you're well qualified, but your only deterrent would be racism in vietnam EFL industry. |

Yes I'm Singaporean! Just turned 26. This is the first time I've heard about racism in the industry. Thanks for the heads up. I'll definitely take note of that. Is that issue more prevalent in the northern part or do both Hanoi and Saigon have their fair share of racial discrimination? And whom are they strongly against? |

The answer to your question has more than 1 billion people in it. If you are of Indian background they might just make some comment about stench or black people. If you are of Malay heritage remember that Vietnamese inherited a middle kingdom syndrome and think that they are superior to you. If you are of Vietnamese background they will question why should they pay you the same rate as white people. The ESL industry is mostly about face. If you can walk past that shit without worries like that getting to you then all the best. It actually isnt too bad in Vietnam. It mostly just boils down to stupid comments. If you cant deal with that then you shouldnt be on the the expat trail. I myself am white but there is nothing i hate more than listenting to French teachers teach English. (Im Aussie not English) |

The sad state of the EFL industry is that if you aren't white, preferably with blonde hair and blue eyes, young, and attractive, you won't have as many jobs available to you as someone who fits that description.
Even if you're a 4th generation Asian American with a flawless English, you'll be asked to teach for less pay than your white counter parts in some places. |

Compass will send your resume and certs around to whatever schools they do business with. If they pick you then you will work at that school. If it doesn't work out for you then you will be unemployed. In other words, Compass doesn't actually hire anyone so whatever your experience was with them it was pointless. They are not the actual hiring manager.
As for ITTT, I did an online course since I needed it for a work permit. I lost my original TEFL years ago since I never needed it. But now schools want to see it. So a TEFL is good.
Their online program was OK. The material they supplied me with was all that was necessary to answer their multiple choice questions. the videos they wanted me to look at of a good teaching performance and a bad one were clear even though the good teacher didn't seem to be following their preferred ESA teaching method. ESA= play a game, then present. practice and produce. The latter PPP being old school. So brush up on games and you'll probably breeze through the program.
You need the TEFL or equivalent. You'll need more than Compass. |

Oh I mean I'm just going to take my TEFL course at compass. This whole ITTT/Compass education thing is quite confusing but I guess ITTT is the head office and Compass education is the designated agency in Saigon? |

I honestly don't know. I passed my TEFL from ITTT that entitled me to access to ITTT forums and other resources including employment. I've seen no mention of Compass education.
Perhaps you should contact ITTT directly?
OTOH iSmart is the name of the school that referred me to ITTT. I've never seen them mentioned either. So maybe there's just some confusion along those lines. Perhaps Compass is just referring you. Maybe they've been authorized to teach the course? I would definitely get more info. But don't expect a conspiracy. In EFL most problems are communication issues. Surprise, surprise! But do check into it. |
