I presented on this very topic for a communications course 15 years ago. My position was similar to the one above---how using uptalk can keep a person (especially a woman) from moving up in their career. In a business environment, uptalk makes the speaker appear tentative and wimpy, as if they're expecting confirmation from others.

I don't use uptalk, but it's very obvious to me in others who do? Especially if they're from Australia? Wink
