While women can get away with sandals, I have read here that many employers don't allow them for men in Saudi Arabia. I would have found that odd somewhere like Oman where 100% of the male students are wearing them.

When I was in Oman the idiot Indian HOD used to insist that non-Omani males wore shoes because 'wearing sandals is against Omani culture'....... I used to point at the feet of the Omanis but he couldn't understand the point I was making. He made the same point every semester at the meeting for the new teachers....

Do you think they will understand your sarcasm?

johnslat recommends the insertion of "IRONY ALERT!!!" when being sarcastic...especially for newbies...

Me? I don't have a sarcastic corpusle in my body...

I am mainly talking about men who work in Universities. At schools, (dress code and) shoe code may be different.
Omani and Emirati guys only wear slide or open-toed ( of course flat) backless mules ( a kind of footwear), to work and anywhere.

Saudi guys wear shoes with socks to work, or slides ( without socks).
Expat males who work in office building-admin/HR/teachers in Saudi Arabia wear closed-toed shoes with socks.
If you are a Muslim, keep a pair of slides at work place.
expat males ( most converts) wear a Saudi dress, ankle-length white gown, they don't usually wear shoes, just slides sometimes with socks ( how gross!).

They wash their feet for prayers so it easier for them to use slides.
In malls
I sometimes saw women ( locals or expats) wear thongs/flip flops in malls.

That is one footwear that was specifically banned in every university I taught at around the Gulf as footwear for work - both male or female. Of course, shopping at the mall is a whole other issue...

Actually, VS,
it was nice to see the colored toenails in thongs with some henna tattoo patterns on their feet, with a gold chain around the ankle. some don't button up their bottom part of abayas.

You can check nearby phones from your blue tooth, and send a message.
Some women hold phones in their hands , so, you can see the type of phone they have and check from blue tooth.

As a result, single Saudi males are not allowed to enter malls at all.

Saudi women? The most dangerous game of all! Shocked

I knew an idiot who used to invite Saudi women to his compound villa alcohol-fueled parties...I was surprised that he even qualified for a passport!
