Lol, I just remembered on the immaculate grooming photo thing. A week or so ago, I saw an ad which requested a "recent photo, smiling, with teeth showing". If you have those pearly whites, show them off. I guess that a few toothless commandos had slipped through the cracks, to the dismay of the employer. China: Unashamedly superficial, unashamedly racist. Unashamedly doing poos on footpaths... Hahaha.

I had a job which required me to go to HK to get my Z-visa and everything turned out fine. Though the guy who was helping me from the school had been there for 7 years and certainly knew EXACTLY what do to, have and say (and not say.) and when.

But personally I wouldn't mind having to go to HK again for the visa.

OP, good news, you can easily work in China as long as you get your butt in there. I have seen people from Africa/Eastern Europe working for the company I am at (that gives me a Z visa, not sure about them), and the salary is solid.

Downside, the visa you will get will never be a Z visa, you will have to run to HK probably every 6 months or so. Another downside is that you will not make as much as a native English speaking teacher. For example, the native teachers at my school start at 8500 per month and can go up to 12,000RMB per month, whereas the non-natives can only make 6-6500RMB per month (no housing included).

As long as you don't sound like Arnold Schwarzenegger you will be good to go for teaching English. If you try to work at a training school they'll place you with children only and if you work at a university it will probably be in the sticks.

Good luck though with whatever you do, I know some non-natives that can do alright as long as they do privates.

Cheers!

Mark

Forgot to mention, my boss is a non-native English speaker (so there is opportunity for you there as well), the only downside is.. well... he makes less money than me... heh!

Technically, but it doesn't stop a good amount of people from doing it. I haven't heard of anyone having problems here in the du', places like Guangzhou are a little more hardcore, but my friend doesn't have a degree and somehow flies in after his trips from the philippines and finds a job within the afternoon. Crazy!

Does your friend have any qualifications that can be construed as being equivalent to a degree?
