Dear Sasha,
Yeah - if you're so smart, why aren't YOU rich?

" . . . I like Orwell's writing as much as the next talented mediocrity".
I have grave doubt that Mr. Self was "reflexively" referring to himself as a "talented mediocrity."
While I'm sure he'd agree with the modifier (except in that he might consider it an understatement), somehow I can't see him having enough insightful introspection to label himself as a "mediocrity."
Regards,
Mediocre John |

Neither I would suggest are you and I. However his being completely devoid of talent (according to you) probably means he has a few more bob in the bank than we do. |
Prizes like the Man Booker are far more about politics than anything else. Certainly not literary ability? Even the Nobel awards are far from neutral judges of purely literary merit.
So, I'd say yours or my insight into a writer's work may not be a far behind in terms of quality evaluation as might be supposed. |

But nowhere near important enough for the cash that comes rolling in.
As I said, I wish I had as little talent. |

I think that as both Blair and Self were/are English the Russians should not interfere in our internal affairs. |

Blair didn't think twice about meddling in others' affairs. Either in Spain, or Iraq... |

I never said I was a fan of either. The programmes the former make I am but not the corporation it has become I am not. It used to be a pillar of impartiality but now...... |
