What does it say about ourselves and what we do, to herald someone who has, what, escaped(?) language teaching!

No wonder we're considered a mere dalliance by most...

In answer to your rhetorical question: It says is that many of us in Japan aren't teaching English because it's what we want to do -- we're teaching English because there's little else we can do in Japan.

Thank God that rhetorical questions, by their nature, don't require answers... Wink

I don't think most of us "heralded" him. We said "congratulations" and "good luck", which are pretty normal things to say to someone who got a new job (any job).

Personally, I congratulated Pitarou because he's doing what he wants to do. I would never want that job, or, really, any other job than teaching. I would never want to sit staring at a computer screen programming all day, and have to commute 2 hours to do it. I could say I feel sorry for Pitarou, except that I know that's what he wants to do.

I say good luck to anyone who does that too. Id rather not though to be honest. Just seen one friend quit his teaching job, sign a contract at a J company and get fired within a week after confusion over his visa.

Also, hearing about my partner getting a hard time at her company for not smiling enough or whatever other bullshit, and getting home at all hours puts me off.

I think that im dumb enough to be satisfied working as a teacher while im here!

Whatever Pitarou's motivation, I'm happy that he is achieving what he desires.
