|
|
Hi all
First post and may I say what a great resource this forum is.
The answer to my question involves pulling together a few strands so please bear with me:)
I have a PGCE and MA Tesol, the latter acquired in 1998. Pre MA experience is 2 years abroad: 1 at university. Post MA esol experience is 2 years teaching at university and upon returning to UK 10 years part-time Esol at my local FE college.
My question is this: I hope to teach abroad again with my wife who is also esol qualified (not MA) but would like to do so with my 16 year old daughter in tow. She would hopefully be enrolled at a school to do A levels. Where do I stand the best chance to get a job for my wife and I but also be able to finance my daughter in school.
Thanks |

Can you be more specific about your wife's qualifications/education as well as her teaching experience? Also, what countries do you absolutely have no interest in? |

My wife has a postgraduate diploma in esol plus first degree in sociology and psychology. She has 10 years FE experience in esol part time.
I am open to all possibilities but would be interested in middle east, far east and south america esp. Japan Korea UAE Oman. I am not against the idea of India China or Morocco but school for my daughter is overriding factor. Thanks |

Scratch the UAE off your list; employers require full-time teaching experience gained post-relevant MA. In fact, your part-time experience will limit where in the world you can teach. |

Any suggestions as to where I could apply? |

That's a question for others to answer since I'm familiar with the Mid East and not other parts of the world. |

Are you looking to work in a school or university? Have you worked in a UK school at all? Did you do your NQT time and gain full QTS?
Either way you are more likely to find your daughter a school that offers the IB rather than A levels. |

Hi
No I only subbed for a year in a UK school and as I couldnt locate a permament job and had a mortgage to pay I took up a non-teaching role within education for local gov.
I have no problem working in schools if my wife can do the same as I realise I need more post MA experience.
I just need a role where I can place my daughter in school for a couple of years doing an IB if needs be.
Thanks for taking the time to respond |

Korea may be your best bet in terms of both you and your wife getting jobs with decent salaries. Korea can't be discussed with these forums, so head to http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/ and register to post your questions. |

Will do that thanks. Have taught there before and liked it.
Before I go is there anywhere anyone can think of within a 5 hour max flight from UK? Would like to keep tabs on other kids at uni Again, dont mind language schools to begin with... |

Assuming you're a UK citizen, you would likely have some interesting options in other EU countries. I'd also look into opportunities in Eastern Europe and Turkey, both of which should be within five hours away. Your best bet would be to post inquiries to the country-specific forums of your choice. |

It would be better to start new discussions within the country specific forums independent of this thread. Just be very clear about you and your wife's credentials, teaching experience, and expectations for your child's schooling. |

Just to clarify, the OP does seem to have 2 years of post-relevant MA full-time university ESOL teaching experience, coupled with 10 years of (relevant) part-time teaching experience in the UK. I have taught a little in the Middle East, but don't know much about the UAE. Are regulations and/or employer expectations so tight that the OP should immediately scratch the whole UAE off of his list, without even trying? |
