Hello All,

I have never been to Japan but want to.

Now seems a good time as I am at a loose end and can spare a year of my life.

I am thinking about flying to Tokyo at the end of the week to hunt. I envisage my wrapping on the huge doors of Interac's HQ and being gently beckoned inwards alla Oliver Twist, to be treated to some piping hot green tea and finger sandwiches.

I teach IELTS and EAP these days. I know that since I don't have a Masters/ DELTA/ Japan experience, I'll be "lucky" to get ALT work.

Is it a good idea? I am highly competent teacher with an excellent CV/ references. What's the worst that could happen. You've probably had this query a million times.

Cue trolls. Plus, if anyone wants to give their sofa up for a hungry traveller, well, your reward will be in heaven.

Again??? Not a troll (since you obviously expect such an attack...do you really understand the definition of a troll?), but just tired of you sticking yer toe in the water, but not committal enuf to post in the past tense!

I say just come and sleep on a friend's couch indefinitely and live off of conbini ramen. Mooch drinks off the locals until your alcohol tolerance is high enough to impoverish your average salaryman. If your friend gets tired of you, seek out new friends that appreciate your sophisticated, albeit drunken, witticisms. It will be a time to remember fondly and help stave off insanity as you sit, underutilized, in a classroom next April.

Jerky, you might find a vacancy at Miyashita Park. Think of it, you can tell your friends back home you live in Shibuya!

The alternative is landing an ALT job at Inaka Chugakko where your biggest challenge is attempting to remain upright and conscious at your desk between human tape recorder sessions. Sounds like a blast!

For Tokyo, the deadline for ALTs was July 25th.
Better luck in January.

Anyway, with Tokyo ALT work now just being paid by the hour, and for just one or two days a week, you would need at least another job.

Plus, the BOE is so disorganized, people who will be selected to be ALTs will not even be notified until early October.
People not selected may not be even notified.

As I recall - Glenski patiently held your hand, and I linked you to cradle rock on youtube. Yet you are back again. We all kind of hope you'll get going and do this one way or another this time...

Now, could you remind us again, what are your qualifications? If no masters, do you at least have an BA?

Have you considered using the Couchsurfing website to set up a free place to stay in Tokyo as a tourist in case fish don't bite and you need to bail back home? Just a thought.

Have you tried applying to jobs in Japan yet? You can apply to some jobs abroad. Why are you planning to arrive in Tokyo without trying to secure a job first from abroad? (get a secure job to get your foot in the door and then when you get experience - try and switch to a job you might like better...)

How old are you and where are you from?

You would probably find working here a step down if you work in a good place now. I went from teachig similar stuff
to working here and actually ended up taking a job teaching small kids (2 - 14) as I was late for public schools and it was the only job where I wouldnt have to teach in a suit, from a script, and all that. I got the impression that the resentment of teaching like that would drive me mad.

I had some nice work lined up teaching part-time business classes and IELTs type stuff but I needed a full visa and regular income.

Depending on where you are from could be a nice adventure. Beware the workload if you work anything that isnt ALT though. Also, I hope you have some cash saved up. Tokyo could eat your savings up one way or another.

I have managed to get a nice job in China so Japan is firmly back on the backburner.

It seems to me that it isn't worth coming to Japan without an MA, DELTA, or both.
