What happens if:

I get a multiple-entry visa in a passport with only 2 clean pages left and arrive in China. Then afterwards, I need to exit temporarily and so I apply for a new passport from within China.

Is the visa transplanted into my new passport ... ? Do I have to start the visa process all over again?

Or how does it work?

I'd be grateful for a heads up.

If you're American you can get pages added to your passport for about $85 or 550 rmb more or less. Check the Shanghai Consulate website, or search consulate add passport pages.

Then you will probably need to carry around both passports till you get a new residence permit in your new passport. Why not renew the passport before coming to China? If it's nearly full your government should still be able to renew it for you, even if it has a couple of years or more on it. They're aware that you can't really travel with a nearly full passport.

As I recall, you cannot get a visa unless you have 6 empty pages to start with. You may have to get a new passport or additional pages anyway. (Is the US the only country that will add pages? Might check with your embassy.)

Quick question, are you referring to a Z visa or an L/F?
I got a new passport a few years ago and the local boys in blue transferred the RP (based on a Z visa) to the new one. Simple process that took about 5 days as I remember. Getting the new passport through a consulate in China was more of a hassle than the visa issues.

The law or requirement of empty, valid passport pages is CLEARLY noted online in many, many locations and forms. You are required to have 6 pages free - that simple. You will not be issued anything without such - and you have to submit the passport (with enough pages) again when you finally followed directions - so if you're late, suffer the consequences.
