That's probably because AMIDEAST recently debuted the 120-hour, face-to-face Professional Certificate in English Language Teaching (PCELT) in partnership with World Learning/SIT Graduate Institute. Like the other branded certs, it includes supervised/assessed teaching practice with actual students---in this case, Arabic-speaking learners. |

Again to make clear... this refers to CERTs, not advanced degrees like MAs or PhDs. To be honest, I can't see anything more useless than an online CERT. One could just order a book from Amazon and get about the same thing.

There are a LOT of people in Saudi Arabia, who are not Saudi Arabian nationals, who are doing just fine with their online degrees, making a good living, and enjoying the perks of working out here. I know quite a few. Their degrees have been attested. I just finished the in class CELTA. Apparently you can take the CELTA online, and there is no differentiation between the CELTA online or in class. From what my instructor told me, the certificate makes no distinction between in class or online. |

Dear LPKSA,
The "online" CELTA is a "blended" one:
"Cambridge CELTA Course Online is a blended learning course with both online and face-to-face elements. Teaching practice is face-to-face and input is online. The interactive online materials have a strong practical emphasis.
Teaching practice groups are the same as for face-to-face courses in terms of:
levels taught
numbers of teaching practice students
range of lesson types
number of times you teach
length of lessons (i.e. minimum of two 40-minute lessons and not longer than one hour).
You will teach for a total of six hours (spread over a minimum of eight occasions), with peers observing. Teaching practice will be arranged by your centre either throughout the course or in blocks.
You will continue to interact with the online environment during the teaching practice phase(s).
http://www.cambridgeenglish.org/teaching-english/teaching-qualifications/celta/ways-to-take-celta/
so there's no difference in the certificates.
Regards,
John |

I'm not dismissing the validity of online degrees or certificates at all. My question is this: Who does the monitoring for the 8 lessons?
The only reason why there is such a taboo for online degrees in Saudi Arabia is because SAUDI ARABIANS who were studying in the states paid off native English speakers to take online courses for them. So since they were caught, it makes sense (right?) that the government would assume that cheating is rampant among ALL online degree students. In my experience, having worked with a lot of people who have online degrees, the ones with online degrees are usually the ones who are more motivated and go above and beyond expectations. |

Dear LPKSA,
I wasn't suggesting the you were "dismissing the validity of online degrees or certificates."
From the info at the link I posted, it seems clear that CELTA trainers at the centre, would monitorr the face-to-face lessons.
All I was pointing out was that the "online CELTA" is not only "online," that it's a blended course that also involves face-to-face teaching and CELTA monitoring.
But any "certificate" that is gained exclusively "online," well, how much validity would you assign to that?

John |

I have four ELT certificates. One was earned exclusively online. It was specifically a program on theory. Read the work, show that you understand what they want you to know, apply it to your job (there you go). I would assign a lot of validity to the certificate if it was earned while the person taking the course was working in the field, and they gained something from it. If it were an online certificate in CPR, or Physics, or brain surgery, then no, I wouldn't quite call it valid. |
