A work permit is only valid with the employer that it is listed under.
If you obtain a work permit with Company or Employer A, and resign or get fired and work for Company B across the street, that work permit is not longer valid. |

But do y'all think immigration knows that? I have a itchy feeling that the employer that you obtained WP from never reports that to immigration, thus, WP staying valid until it expires. Perhaps, it's too much of trouble and 'tea money' to report those who are MIA. |

I'd err on the side of caution on that front - better to play it legal and stay safe than not. Either way, the authorities will most likely be able to see that you've been not working for a few months-year and that'll tick a red flag, no?
What CAN be done, as I understand it, is getting a work permit at Company A and then get a job at Company B - they can take your documentation from A and process it much more quickly, as I understand it.
Also, a sneaky but doable thing is to work for a company and then just stop requesting hours. You're still technically "employed" but not actually doing any work. Happened accidentally to a friend of mine and it could be manipulated at a larger company I suppose! |

A WP only matters at a couple of foreign owned large mills. Otherwise, it does not matter. The entire work permit issue IMO, is focused on the Chinese for the most part.
I believe that the schools and govt would rather NOT have foreign teachers working legally, because if they are legal they can go to labor court.
There was a somewhat high profile labor court case recently involving a foreigner.

1. It's not easy and 2, company A has to agree to do this, and many won't because company did the legwork (and possibly paid) for the WP. |

This really goes to show how different your Vietnam experience can be depending on where you work. I've never worked at a school that didn't get all their teachers work permits. Not to mention that once you get a WP, you can then get a residents card which is multiple entry visa valid for as long as your work contract is. I can't imagine working for these schools I hear about that don't do this for their teachers. It would definitely make life in Vietnam a lot less enjoyable. |
