In an effort to curb use of phones in my class, and to avoid being FILMED and have a video of ME broadcast all over the Internet, I want to lay it into my young Saudi students that cell phones are not acceptable in class. I told them in the beginning of the semester that phones are not allowed, and well, there they go with their phones out, filming me....
Would it be appropriate to just simply grab a phone when they are filming me, and throw it across the room, followed by stomping it? They have no right to film me. If I sat in my Uni. classes as an undergrad with a video camera, filming my professor, I would have been subject to expulsion from the university. These students will face no such repercussions. What do I do here? Advice is needed.

What you should do and what you can do are very different things. You should confiscate the phone or tell the student to get out. You're unlikely to be supported by the admin. What you can do? Easy, leave. |

You confiscate the phone. Any subsequent backtalk or protest: Send the "student" out of the class.
Make sure the rule is in writing, preferably in the syllabus.
Of course, I always give a little speech about use of cellphones being a mark of disrespect and hence intolerable. I never had anybody film me and, if I had, I would have seriously flown off the handle. All in all, other than the odd ringing phone (immediate expulsion from the classroom with an Absent), I never experienced any problems. Lay down the law right off the bat, and stick to it religiously. |

My favorite cellphone story was in Egypt. The first day of class he walked in with a bucket of water. He said that if he saw or heard a phone, it went into the bucket. It only took one phone to sink to the bottom and he never had another problem. Of course one needs the support of management for this sort of rule and fortunately, he had it. I don't expect that there are many places in KSA that would let you. But, wouldn't it be fun to be able to do it?

Well, lazy teachers lead to lazy students. |

I know teachers who take a box into class and walk around collecting all phones at the start. Others simply take them off students when they start using them and place them on the teacher's desk until the end of the class. |

Well, PKSA, do as the Saudi teacher did in the following video!

Make sure next time you bring a thin (not thick) plastic stick! |

It seems a little unnecessary to do that. I would rather be able to raise my voice at students who disrupt the class or cheat. Unfortunately there is that thing where Saudis can group up and find something to complain about and the next thing you know, they get their own way which can mean many things. |

You did note, plumpy, that it was Egypt, not Saudi... and an actual accredited university where there were rules that were enforceable with administration support. It only needed to be done once... and the word was out and for years after he never had a problem - he merely had to mention it on the first day. For these youth who arrive never having encountered any rules or enforcement, it was extremely effective.

(the Thai teacher's response was effective too and IMHO well deserved... love how she barely missed a word on her explanation of the lesson.) |

The first time I saw it a long time ago I though it was Korean, but the melody of the language sounds tonal. |
