Only the most clueless directors/deans/presidents are unaware of why teachers are not willing to stay in this country. Dealing with life here away from the actual job is bad enough. But then when you go to work and have to deal with a hostile and unprofessional environment on top of that, you would have to be insane to want to stay here for any length of time. Its like they all work together to drive you out. Every semester my students are puzzled as to why I'm here and why any person would want to come here voluntarily.
Perhaps if many of these contracting companies were cut out and the jobs made direct, (which would result in the teachers' pay increasing significantly AND the universities SAVING money) turnover would decrease and people would stay for longer periods of time. |

Contracting companies make a healthy profit for their owners !
As for terms and conditions for direct hires, universities do not have a free hand. The Ministry of Higher Education in Riyadh lays down what they can pay - in salaries and in allowances. |

If you were a manager
and the students started complaining?
Would you keep me on anyway?
Tell the flakes "stop being worthless and lazy"
If you were a manager
and a student lost face
would you say "poor baby"
there's a class at an easier place. |

Hire married teachers period. A married teacher will not pick up and leave on the next payday. Single teachers would have no problem especially if they were on a Business visa. Also, Married teachers tend to leave more of their money in the country.
One of the major problems is East vs. West. The west derive their power from what they can provide and the East gets their power from what they can withhold. "Follow my miserable misguided rules or I will double up on your misery. I'll show you who is boss." At that point it's time to check out the travel agencies and get your CV in order if you are single. |

Yes certainly true. The Ministry of Higher Education has a salary cap for Saudi and non-Saudi staff. However, there are ways around the cap, but you would need a Saudi friend with a lot of authority to pull some strings. |
