So I have been looking on seriousteachers.com and many job offerings in Saudi Arabia offer flights, accommodation, vacation, health insurance, and a salary of $3,000 a month tax free.

It seems too good to be true, but these offers are relatively common in Jeddah, Riyadh, etc.

Is this a common salary and setup, ie, can I believe this?

There are lots of jobs that pay more.... If you have a master's and some experience AND are native, the ELI at KAU should pay at least 4,000US a month plus housing, flights... and you only work 24 weeks of the years for 3 - 4 hours a day.

But most people there hate their lives.... Saudi is not for the average person.

And I thought at KFUPM you could get OT to increase your salary and heard some guys make 5000USD a month there with OT.

The ELI at KAU certainly has lots of OT so many guys do well.

Miserable expats are usually the ones who don't make an effort to get out of the compound - for men it is easy for women not so easy - but your life changes completely if you make an effort to mix with the locals and take an interest.

Year after year I have seen so many miserabloe expats - the same miserable expats who complain about the students and the institutions -and troll these sites posting bile about the organizations and the administrators- these are usually the same ones who don't make an effort with the students...

I can't understand the mentality of people who come to a place, never attempt to learn the language or understand the culture, spend their whole time in the company of expats and never go anywhere and then bitch about how bad the place is yet never leave!! Can someone explain to me what is going through their heads?

As for mingling with the 'locals', how, especially if you are a woman? The only interaction that a female has is perhaps with a student or if lucky with the Arab staff, if they decide to become friends with you, but even then, it's very rare to be invited to their homes. It's usually the Palestinian, Syrians, Egyptians teachers that one mingles with. Proper KSA people- rare. (in my experience).

He did say that it was easier for male than female teachers. In the rest of the Gulf, there is also the group that lingers in every faculty room whinging about everything from the admin to the students to the weather to the housing to the everything else. It is probably a constant in human nature.

But Saudi with its numbers of the teachers and lower standards in hiring combined with poor vetting ends up with a higher number. So many of the teachers that I knew who were fired in the rest of the Gulf... repeatedly... ended in Saudi as the job of last resort with decent pay. (and even that seems to be dropping rapidly) And unhappy as they are, it is their only option for a job that will pay their bills.
