Is the money really worth it???

No.

It is my belief that even the proverbial "canary in the mine shaft" would vacate if s/he could work its way out of its cage...

Tell me, canary, why are you still there?

Seems like a "no-(bird)brainer" to me...

Dear The Fifth Column,

" . . . if s/he could work its way out of its cage..."

Alas, money is too often the key to opening that cage.

Regards,
John

SOUNDS LIKE, not saying it is true, but sounds like Fifth Column has never, or at least not yet, had to support a family, pay for a house, or feed his family........after losing a good job in the country of origin......THAT (losing the job) has happened to thousands of ESL teaching in the world.....and 770 Euros per month doesn't accomplish that goal.

Banks, take away houses, cars, furniture, or anything else when you can't pay your bills. Sorry, I don't want my family sleeping in a cardboard box. So, yes, while the situation is often horrid, my family (and the families of many of my coworkers) are eating and sleeping in a bed in a home because of the MONEY.

If you, or anyone else, wants to live in a tent, then go for it. I wouldn't judge you. So, don't judge us!!!

You'd be incorrect on all counts.

But, that doesn't seem to have stopped you before, so...

...carry on...

Speaking as someone who has to support a family I can't understand why someone would keep biting the hand that feeds him - it is not difficult to be fired in Saudi and if you take someone to the labor court which is a long winded and drawn out process which can take months you will most certainly never be reinstated and will certainly be blacklisted from working in the Kingdom - the moment you bring a case your exit papers are pretty much made out and wating for you to collect them no matter what the outcome - there are plenty of other jobs in the Gulf and in other countries that pay qualified and experienced teachers as well if not better than Saudi -so instead of messing all over the cage why doesn't this bird just leave and try another cage somewhere else? Or is it that noone else is interested....?

I have an interview for PMU tomorrow night.

Thanks HavCrick for your post - it's very informative.

When did you end up getting your textbooks this semester? What were you expected to do in class without any books?

My wife was working at PMU and just quite. They are super shady. She was lied to about benefits and other stuff to get hired. I'm sure the people they bring over are treated better however.

Here is my PMU story.

I apply from within Saudi. They email me and ask me to come for an interview - in Miami. I said, I am in Saudi and you know my boss wont let me leave. Why cant I meet you on your campus? No, I must go to Miami BUT they will pay half my flight.

No thx.

Emails a few days later. You are passing up a great chance to join this place.

Oh, you already have a job in the KSA. No can do!

Recruiting trips are run for the benefit of those within the org who get to fly to Miami or wherever at employer's expense. It is not about an efficient recruitment procedure ! Nor is it about making life easier for the would-be-teacher !

I just received a PM from a poster who tells me that this is not the case. It has been the case in every ME institution I have worked for or been associated with.

If Raju is worried about the public image of PMU, let him post here.
