I have been reading posts about how much one can make in KSA, but I would like to ask what you do with the money.

Before going to KSA, I knew what I wanted to do after, and to reach that goal I needed money. I worked my butt off and made around $60K a year towards the end of my five years. Much to my wife's disliking, we didn't do a lot of traveling and vacationing like a lot of our friends did in KSA. Now we have left KSA, set up a great life back home and and thank King Abdullah ever time we wake up on Sunday morning and sip coffee.

It seems to me that a number of people go to KSA, earn money to live in the moment and then are trapped there, especially the ones with families.

My attitude was to go there, work my tail off for five years, get out and set up a nice life. I know it's all a matter of personal taste, but I never understood those people that wouldn't work overtime and/or blew all their cash.

Well, not all people are like Peter! Razz

The questions is "why people fail to save money in the Magic Kingdom?".

1. Over spending in drinking and other stuff
2. No plan of saving
2. Using plastic money
3. Having debt
4. Miserable ignorant like members of 300 and 500 clubs
5. No purpose of life

To all of those people here in the land of sand; Wake up and start saving the cabbage. Peter did the right thing by coming here to work and save hard for his ultimate goal of GOING HOME to a house he wanted for himself and his wife. His attitude of gratitude toward the King is a very refreshing difference from the nasty attitudes of complaining and carping about "how bad things are here". He and his kind are very rare here indeed.

Dear Peter, please pm me.

Why do you care about what other people do with their money?

Be a miserable, ant-social sod while in KSA. It is good training for the dire life you will have after leaving !

He doesn't. He is just demonstrating the smug superiority that is so common (and so tiresome and old) on this board. He's a fast learner, though. I'll grand him that. With only 100 posts under his belt, his attitude is right up there with those who have well over a thousand to their credit.

Some have managed fake smug superiority with numbers well below 100. Not that I detected any in PP's curiosity. It is common knowledge that other than those who go to Saudi because of religion, it is all about the money. I too have found it odd that so many work there for years under often unpleasant conditions and end up having little to show for it in the end. One can see the difficulty of saving if one has a family or families, but I am more talking about the single teachers. But as muskilla pointed out... we all make our choices and then get to enjoy them... or not.

Been here 2 years now, bought more land adjacent to family house in wife's country last year, just bought a car cash, will have another house in the big city for children in the future when they go to uni in about two years. After that, save for UK property for retirement fund. I like to have an aim.

Also, buy honey for mead.

I don't care to hear about what people do with their money; I just want for newcomers to think about why they are going. Some people like to live and enjoy life in the moment, but others like me plan and work towards realizing those plans. You can really make stuff happen by working hard in KSA.

Are you going there to earn money to live a good life, or are you going to earn for another time and place?

Yet, that could said for any job, whether on home soil or abroad. But human nature being as it is...

By the way, I didn't go to KSA for religious reasons or for the money. In fact, prior to changing careers to teaching, I netted $10-12K USD more a year than what I earned in the Kingdom as a direct hire with a relevant master's degree. For some, it's not always about the "Benjamins."

Yes, but you (or your family) are not living in Saudi Arabia when you're at home. It does depend on what the alternative is, but one needs to really consider if they want to bring their kids up there. KSA was good for us, but we got out before our kids got too old.

You don't care, yet you ask repeatedly.
