Where do you think the most teaching opportunities are in Mexico? I currently live in the DF and teach and there are tons of opportunities here, but I am looking to get out of the city, for general security, pollution, overpopulation issues. Where else would be a good place to go where there are similar opportunities for good pay? Or does that not exist anywhere else? I've spent a lot of time in Oaxaca and I know there isn't much there. I'd love to here everyone's opinion on this. |

Hands down, there are more jobs in DF. But if you are looking to move for security reasons you might find you are moving into an inferior, not superior, situation. Mexico City is generally considered to be one of the safest places in Mexico. I don't entirely agree, but I did live there for many years with only very minor issues. Safer still is Puebla, still pretty large and a fair number of jobs. I researched moved there some years ago, and I think it would be an OK place to live (in terms of work, outside of works it is my favorite city in all of Mexico). There is also a lot of work in Guadalajara, but it is more expensive than DF, more spread out if you count Zapopan and Tlaquepaque are part of the metropolitan area. Public transportation is no where near as soon as DF. Traffic is just as bad. Taxis are way more expensive. Maybe find a job online and just decide where you want to live based on, well, where you WANT to live, and not where there is work. You can likely find at least something anywhere, whether it be part time in a school, or private classes. Personally, I would stay away from the northern states, and concentrate more on the mid sized central cities like (in no particular order) Leon, Guanajuato, Queretaro, San Miguel de Allende, Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosi, Pachuca, like that. I also love the state of Tabasco, especially Villahermosa. Not sure about work in any of those places, though. |

You might try Queretaro or Pachuca...much smaller than DF and fewer opportunities, but much less traffic and at least as safe as the capital.
Merida is very safe, but opportunities are hard to come by. |

Thanks for the ideas! I'm always looking into different places and trying to travel out to different cities to find options for the future. I realize that people say DF is "safer" than other parts, but I'm willing to take the risk that another place could be safer. I've already been violently assaulted in the capital twice, and am ready to try anywhere else after these experiences. Also the pollution/altitude combination just makes me feel unhealthy. I'm just not cut out for the big city life. I have visited Puebla, and it looks like a nice option. I definitely wouldn't head anywhere north. I was considering Guadalajara but have heard mixed reviews about it and am not sure about it. If I could pick anywhere, I would choose Oaxaca to live in, but it seems like there aren't many options there. It's a shame because I love my job here and earn well, but I just can't stand the city anymore. I guess the best thing to do is just pick somewhere and see what is available once I'm living there. |

Oh, and with the DF, the rent in the "nice" areas is so high. You either pay a ridiculous premium for the niceness and security of Polanco, Condesa, Lomas, etc, or pay less but in a less reputable area. I'm looking for somewhere where I could rent a decent apartment without breaking the bank. |

There are a number of pleasant neighborhoods more or less in the center of the city that are pleasant and safe, if not "nice" (as the word is understood these days in Mexico), and won't cost you an arm and a leg to live there. |

1. I wouldn’t even call Polanco “safe”. I know that’s the general consensus, but my impression is that it’s not as safe as plenty of less wealthy neighbourhoods, because the open wealth attracts a certain kind of crime.
2. Also, rather than commiyting yourself to living somewhere without knowing how it is, how about trying several places for a week or so at a time to give yourself a chance to look around.
3. Check out Querétaro, is my suggestion. |

I also wouldn't consider Condesa safe. If I recall correctly, it was on the top 10 list of high crime areas a few years back, I think in one of the first spots. There are lots of nice areas if you don't mind not being around foreigners - and a little further from downtown. Not fashionable, but established and stable areas where you will get to know your neighbors and have somewhere to run if you have problems. I can totally relate to wanting to get our of DF. We moved from there almost two years ago, to a very small town in a semi rural area, that is fairly peaceful for now. I say for now because, though we are not in the north, I fear if things don't change some of the narco violence might start to drift this way. So far it hasn't, but I am not impressed with the "process" the new so-called president has made. |

Let me tell you about Chalcatongo, Tuxtepec, Teotitlan, Pinotepa Nacional, or any of the other locations in the Oaxaca Regional University System. (SUNEO) |
