This November I will be moving to Russia, where I got a job with the IEC (International Education Centre) at their new center in Malakhova, 30 km south-east of Moscow. I feel good about my new employers, and according to the contract I will be earning about 42,000 Rub, but all my rent, utilities, except internet, and airfare should be covered (hopefully). I will also be living with another teacher.

Based on your experience, do you think I will be able to keep paying off my student loans, or should I look at deferring them?

Thank you!

Paying off student loans? Surely that's one of the reasons you escape your home country; to avoid paying such things.

What country are you from? Different countries have different rules (obviously)

It totally depends on which country he/she is from. In the USA you cannot default on student loans even in bankruptcy. The IRS will garnish your wages.

Not sure about the UK or Australia.

And if you wanted to pay off your debts fast, moving to a new country to teach English probably isn't the best way. You would earn more at home.

Consider flight and travel expenses, visa applications, medical insurance, contingency issues if you need to leave ASAP.

Perhaps a financial planning course would be better suited for you! I get the impression you are a fresh grad.

and now with the ruble crashing against both the UK pound and US dollar, you aren't getting the bang for buck in Russia. Asia would have been a better choice purely for $.

I'm from the US, and right now the payments would be about $200. I'm not worried if I defer on them, but I wanted to know it's possible to make payments while overseas and not have to give blowjobs to survive.

ah $200 that's nothing. easy to make that in a few hours without whoring yourself out hahaha. Just the currency exchange when you convert back to US $ may not be favourable.

If you've already accepted a job then it sounds like you are on the way over. happy travels.

Get one private student. Charge 50$ in dollars per 90 mins. Teach once a week. Fees taken care of. Now teach two students, and pay back at double the rate.

Couldn't be easier.

PS, the super local talent probably means you wouldn't be able to compete in any other arena but the language provision : )

200 bucks is not much.
I used to pay 700 bucks a month on a loan and live off on the rest.
Having a free apartment with free utilities sure helps.

Not really free, of course, strictly speaking...
