I have just moved to Beijing and want to do private IELTS and EAP teaching in the evenings/ on weekends - what's a good way to start advertising?

Thanks for your advice/ suggestions.

If you want adults as privates ask a local bar about doing a free English Corner once a week (maybe a free meal).
You'll get enquiries about privates.

Very effective if you use the phrase 'I demand the freedom to do privates'.

This is where the best money is if you are not an AP Teacher. I got 6 tutoring students advertising with a travel agency who handles about 2,000 study abroad students every year. Since I got married though, I got a bit lazy and slacked of to just two students. My wife actually earns almost the same as me and I am looking for a non-teaching gig if I cannot find an International School placement soon. Tutoring doesn't give you insurance benefits and I always fear getting sick and needing one of those expensive hospital stays. If not for that, I'd do only tutoring.

How much would you charge for an hour of tutoring?

I used to charge 250RMB an hour until it was explained to me that 250 in Chinese sounds similar to "I am stupid" in Chinese, so I now charge 260RMB an hour.

What happened to the general consensus that working outside of one's contract was a very bad idea?

My understanding is that last year's laws were still being enforced.

Correct me if I am wrong.

My understanding is that it is OK if your boss says it is OK.
The dean of my department is the one that arranges my private classes.

My boss told me that I couldn't because the law said that I couldn't.

Boy, that worry went away pretty fast.

Oh wait. This is China.

I also used to charge 250 yuan but this year raised it to 275 for my 2 existing students and for new students I will charge 300. These kids all live in a rich community so that is something you should also consider - the community where your students come from. If it is not affordable for them their parents will seek out a new tutor who charges less.

Glad to know you turn down the poor because some are rich, kind of kills your whole rant about people wanting to make a buck off of other folk. No need to mention I read too much into that, I know.

Will be tutoring my child personally, no need for greedy foreign teachers Twisted Evil

I do not do private lessons. If I did I would consider how much they could pay as much as I would consider how good of a student they would be in the lessons. Will they do homework, can they take feedback well, etc.

I would add:
'They pay me when they cancel late'

I usually charge 2 pints for an hour lesson. Maybe a burger too, if I'm hungry.
