Hi all:)
My wife and I are looking at Oman for the first time and were wondering if anyone has any advice about the University of Nizwa or any university in Oman that they would recommend working at.
Any information on work conditions (contact hours and required on-campus hours), pay scale, co-workers, students and/or HR/Admin would be really appreciated. Additionally any advice on regions to live in Oman would also be great.
Some background ... my wife has an EdD (TESOL) and I have an MEd (TESOL). Both of us have over 10 years of ESL/EFL experience in a variety of countries and work environments. We prefer to use public transport cabs (if reasonably priced) and riding bikes.
Thanks and all the best

With your credentials, if you both could hold off applying for any straggling leftover positions until the TESOL Arabia conference and job fair this March, you'll have more opportunities to choose from. For example, Sultan Qaboos University does their face-to-face recruiting---they're considered the most desirable university employer in Oman. Many university recruiters from other parts of the Gulf attend the job fair as well. Plus, March is the start of the hiring season for the upcoming academic year. |

Additionally any advice on regions to live in Oman would also be great. Pay scales vary depending on where you're working. Students are generally polite but very lazy and the range of abilities within a class can be huge. Oman has a culture of forcing teachers to desk sit so 8-4 is common with 20 hours contact time also being normal. HR/Admin is usually a nightmare to deal with, they don't want to work.

We prefer to use public transport cabs (if reasonably priced) and riding bikes. Shared taxis are VERY cheap BUT generally only operate on main roads, taking a taxi by yourself can be expensive and they will try to rip you off as taxi drivers the world over try to do. I wouldn't personally ride a bike in Oman, too hot and too dangerous.
Thanks and all the best

if the OP is currently living/ working in the gulf region then attending the job fair is sound advice. If, however, both he and his wife are living in the US for example, that's a mighty expensive venture to attend! |

Sure, but with their strong qualifications, they'll get offers. Besides, the OP had previously posted about jobs in the UAE as well. Keep in mind, some employers recruit at TESOL Arabia only, so there's no way to know which Gulf universities will be represented at the other major conferences in the US (TESOL International) and UK (IATEFL) until February or March. TESOL Arabia is also great for networking opportunities. |
