A friend of mine is looking to move to the UAE with her husband. He'd be her dependent. She said that dependents are automatically allowed the right to legally work. Is that true? She says it's only for Dubai. |

Thanks. I've told her over and over residency doesn't equal the right to work. |

Obviously, you haven't been providing her with the correct answer!
Keep trying! |

Does she plan on simply arriving in country to look for a job? She may not be aware that teaching positions are generally obtained while the applicant is outside the country. Besides, unless she's a licensed and experienced k-12 teacher or an MA TESOL holder with 3+ years of university-level experience, she's not likely to qualify for any teaching job in the Emirates. |

No. She's going to get one ahead of time. She's a licensed teacher and has taught for about 8 years in the USA. She has an MAEd and about five years experience in Korea. She'd really like her husband to work in a bank. I really don't get it. |

I suspect most banking positions require Arabic-English bilingual skills. |

What she wants is possible - many have done it, but there will be plenty of hoops to jump through... And it would be complicated still more if her husband isn't a US passport holder - with a passable resume/CV.

I can give her a lead to getting a job in the Starfleet Academy on the Training Ship in orbit around Epsilon Centauri. |

Don't want to change the subject, but is the same true of a wife under a husband's sponsorship?

Usually a wife needs her husband's written permission to work to get a labour card. She does not have to have an employer as a sponsor per se. |
