Hi all,
I am working for a language academy and may have a one-to-one student in the next few weeks who wants help with preparation for the TOEFL exam. Now, I'm not familiar with this exam at all. Can anyone point me me in the right direction in terms of online information/resources/reading material to familiarise myself with the exam? My school will tell me more closer to the time, but would like to do a bit of research on it first.

google "toefl test prep material". You can't miss.
Alternatively, there is no shortage of "TOEFL Prep" books in just about every bookstore on the planet that you can look at or download.

This.
My preference is to use the prep materials from ETS and Princeton Review. Just follow Princeton Review's suggested plan of study and use the ETS materials to supplement.
In addition, http://esl-lab.com/ has some excellent listening exercises. |

Hi everyone,
Thanks so much...that has all been really helpful! Much appreciated.
I have been looking through youtube to see some sample speaking tests (like you can find for IELTS or the Cambridge suite of exams), but there doesn't seem to be any (except for some computerised native speakers giving sample answers). Am I missing something? Does anyone have links to any real-life TOEFL exams?
Many thanks! |

Links to "real" TOEFL exams? Exactly how are you planning to 'help' this student prepare for the test? What's your strategy? |

My school fortunately has most of the TOEFL books found in a bookstore. I just take the practice tests from them and turn them into power point. Some of the books are crap but at least it can familiarize students with the form of the speaking test.
Of course, a student's vocabulary, reading and listening skills need to be at a certain level for it to be helpful. |

ETS's uses retired versions of the real test for their practice tests, so that's the closest you're going to get to "real-life" exams (without actually paying to take it). Nowadays, I imagine that you can download samples off of their website and, of course, you can always purchase copies of their exams--both paper and computer based.
As LarueLarry already said, your student needs to have a certain level of English ability in order to be able to productively study for the test. If she's not scoring within at least a hundred points (and, preferably, much less) of her desired scores on the practice tests, then you need to back up and work on helping her develop basic language skills. As TOEFL Prep is essentially test prep and teaching of test taking strategies, its critical that the student has a sufficient foundation in the basics before beginning work on test prep exercises. |
