Hi Board
1)To look for a position in Japan without being hired from overseas, you have to quietly use a tourist visa while applying in country, is that right?
2) Is it unusual for employers to hire someone in this situation who does not yet have a work visa? (I understand it would be necessary to exit Japan for a short time to switch over to a work visa.)
3) There isn't any way to enter Japan on a work visa if one hasn't already been hired from overseas, right?

I'm sure there are other topics but just to address them/procrastinate on my real work:
1) It's a common practice that is becoming increasingly sketchy, but will most likely be overlooked given that you are a Westerner and not a Filipino and they need the people anyways. It's not uncommon anyway. There is a host of a certain anime podcast who did just that a few years ago - now he's gainfully employed in Japan, married and having a ball of it.
2) The big schools may not want to bother but smaller schools will probably take a chance and you may luck out on better working conditions (emphasis on the MAY). You'll have to hop over to Korea or some other country of your choice. Again - technically illegal but nobody really cares.
3) Not that I know of. Gotta do the Narita/Haneda Shuffle. |

I thought it wasn't necessary anymore for people to leave the country to get their visa processed. |

It isn't. It hasn't been for over a decade and a half. But the tired old memes just keep on being passed down from generation to generation as cultural law. Like the "JET's all have subsidised/free housing and cars" meme. It was never true, but it still won't die. |

| The JET Programme...I was on it back in the 90's. The jealousy and the one-upmanship was immense, especially regarding those who had free housing and those who didn't. Also, the benefits: my BOE actually paid for my Japanese lessons in Tokyo during summer break. Should have kept that to myself. Oh, the jealousy. Cultural oneupmanship, too: "My school had a rice planting day....you haven't truly experienced Japan until you've done rice planting..." Eyes rolled so much during those days I think I did permanent eye damage to myself. |

If you're eligible for a Working Holiday Visa, that's a better option. If you're not, I believe that a tourist visa is the only way.

It's not unheard of, but you're taking a big risk. Your best chance of finding a job is with an employer who needs a teacher urgently, and can't afford to be picky. And that means you'll have to work illegally while you wait for your work visa to be processed, which is risky.
In my opinion, it's better to stay in your home country, get some teaching credentials, and then apply for jobs from overseas.

That information is many years out of date. It's now entirely possible to change your class of visa while you're in Japan. I did it.

You need a job offer to get a work visa. |

I would just be wary of working for any company that is willing to break the law (and employ someone with just a tourist visa). If they are willing to do that, that probably means they're not going to be a good company to work for/treat their employees fairly/honor employees' contracts/have a lot of power over you since you are working illegally and must rely on them for your salary. They could also just not pay you, and since you were just on a tourist visa, who would you complain to? You'd be guilty of breaking the law as well.
Maybe it'll take longer, but coming to Japan the right way (with a work visa) is the safest option. |
