I've worked for all of them.
High, high turn over rate for both local staff and teachers. And yes, I have seen staff sleep in classrooms and crying when they have not made sales quotas.
Sadly, these companies don't have to treat staff and teachers nice - there is a seemingly endless supply of both. |

I did a year at GEOS, and in that time we went through 4 managers. I felt so much pity for them.
I wish I had kept copies of some of the faxes that came from head office. Every month was a numbers game, and the schools at the bottom of the sales list were really picked on. Each month your school would be given a 'target' amount of money to take in, either through new students or student contract renewals. It was a no win situation. IF you made your target, the next month target would be higher. If you missed your target, the manager would be singled out and mocked.
The pathetic part was that some of the foreign staff even got in on it. Lists of 'successful' teachers were circulated, based on sales and renewals of students taught by that teacher, sorry instructor. I even got 'pep rally' type phone calls from my trainer- not about teaching, but about approaching students to renew their contracts.
As for the managers, they spent a lot of time folding paper (company flyers) and making posters BY HAND! The signs outside the school, at the nearest train station,etc, were all made by the school manager. THey also had to stand on the streetcorner handing out flyers, go to local universities and put up notices, etc etc etc. Most were really nice girls, just young and naive and totally exploited by GEOS. |

Not to defend GEOS or Japanese Eikaiwas in general, but this is what a career in Sales is like. I worked in the Computer Training industry and the Software industry in the U.S.A., and although I wasn't in Sales, I interacted with Salespeople on a daily basis. The above quote is exactly what their lives were like. This situation is not unique to GEOS, Eikaiwas, or Japan. It's the life of a Salesperson. |

Yes it is the life of salespeople. However, salespeople usually get a commission for each sale or at the very least a salary which matches their skills. |
