“Sorry, Russians. When it comes to bingeing, you’ve got nothing on Vietnam’s women....”

Has Vietnam changed that much since I left?

Wow! If that study is accurate, it totally destroys my illusions of Vietnamese women being, for the most part, teetotalers. But then again, I have never been there. Any one on the ground there that can share any anecdotal evidence?

I think I'm more shocked that Aussies aren't mentioned at all.

The story is for grabbing eyeballs, it pretty much loses any credibility when it flips back and forth with the term "drinkers".

Quote:
Health experts insist men should enjoy no more than two drinks per day. The average male Irish drinker has four.

Russian guys? More than five.

So unless you say what percentage of each population is "drinkers", the numbers mean very little. One country could have only 1% drinkers who totally get annihilated, while another country may have 75% drinkers who are much more restrained. While some of these numbers may mean something, they have done a great job of making their story seem meaningless.

Quote:
males out drink females.

The word would be "outdrink", but as some spellcheckers don't like it, they decided to say "out drink" instead.

Gawd, I know VN college students who can come up with a more solid story than this one.

Really? The Viet gals I dated were either teetotalers or allergic to alcohol. This is especially compared to Japanese gals, who are total drinkers and damn good at it.

Yeah, I don't believe it at all.

Actually reading it in more detail, it's just dodgy reporting giving a false impression. It says that amongst the female drinkers, the percentage that binge once a week is higher than men (1% different, so basically the same). So yeah, in the tiny percentage of the female population that drink, 23% binge at least once a week. But the article says that Vietnamese women are "slightly more apt to get crapulous each week than that country’s men." which is simply false, even according to the statistics presented in the article.

Yep - pretty rubbish article all round.

Women are drinking more and in a less healthy manner than before but on the whole it is men who drink most and worst.

I prefer women not to drink at all. It wastes money and is extremely bad for their health and appearance. I imagine women find drunken, beer bellied men unattractive too.

I tend not to drink or drink very moderately when in a relationship and slightly more and more immoderately when single.

There's no way in hell Vietnamese women are heavy drinkers. There's a very small minority that go out and drink a lot who won't even take a sip. I work in a rather large school, and the school often takes the whole staff out to eat and drink, and none of the Vietnamese women will touch alcohol. The men, down it like there's no tomorrow though.

I would second this.

As an Aussie, I think it is now my duty in life to find a beautiful alcoholic, yet morally pure Vietnamese woman to wed. Being a clean living Aussie, I believe that I am equipped to pull her out of her dependencies. I will prove that the report's omissions regarding Aussies results in accuracy, and that its findings regarding Vietnamese women and their drinking do not have to be true.
