It doesn't matter how offensive Clarkson is, or who complains about him. While he is making money he'll be on TV, and he's still making money because when you combine:

-the people who agree with him,
-the ones who don't but just to turn a blind eye because they like shows about cars, etc,
-the one who disagree to the point that it makes them uncomfortable, so they have to make excuses and justify his behaviour because otherwise they'd have to admit they are part of the problem,

then overall you get enough people watching him to keep the advertisers happy.

Now, the first group, there is little you can do about, but there aren't enough of them to keep him in business. The others though, the ones who know that his racist misogynist behaviour is wrong, but keep watching anyway, they are the real problem. They are the ones who are keeping him on TV and by watching him, they are condoning him, no matter how hard they try to justify it to themselves.

Of course, they are also the ones who get most riled when someone else stands up to call him out on it. Better to just shoot the messenger, otherwise they might be forced to consider their own behaviour.

There's your solution: If you don't like his comments/attitudes, don't watch him. I never have. Very Happy

Regards,
John

This story is really taking the mick. Oops.

Has anyone ever sued themselves (to gain publicity)? To make things even more newsworthy, my ancestors are Irish.

I'm afraid to say a certain compound noun was introduced in the UK this week following the story of Thai violinist Vanessa Mae being involved in the Sochi Olympics qualification. Forum rules forbid me repeating this compound noun, but just think of the sport she does and a demeaning term for Asians, and you get the idea.

This latest compound noun wouldn't have existed were it not for the hoo-hah following Top Gear's gaff and some Indian actress's publicity campaign. Well done for increasing vocabularies, folks.

Too right!

What sort of a world is it when a real talent like David Attenborough is not the BBC's most famous presenter of a 'fact-based' programme?

I'm a huge Attenborough fan and support his extended and expanded career. Where can I vote? You really haven't lived til you've seen him dubbed in Czech and German, though.

I think I'll live, cheers.

David is basically the chap responsible for the whole premise of the TV documentary. He was the BBC director of something important which produced Kenneth Clark's 'Civilisation' all those years ago. Revolutionary in its day, and still compelling viewing now. Created the mould for the whole genre, including David's own work. And, even the dumbed down programming from across the water.

Clarkson, appealling only to the lowest common denominator, will be forgotten presently, leaving nothing of worth after him.
