Anyone know anything about mailing your passport home to get the visa? (then having it mailed back out to you).

You can submit postal applications for visas in the UK so if I got my friend to send in the passport on my behalf, have them mail it back to him then he mails it to me? Might work?

The only flaw in the plan is my passport wouldn't have a Thailand exit stamp on it (the UK doesn't stamp passports so the lack of a UK entry stamp wouldn't be a problem), though I'm not sure how closely they'd check for something like that.

I'd be willing to spend 5000 or so to get the medical, police clearance, and fed-ex the passport both ways. It's when it's 20000 that I'm not happy. That's like 2 months wages in your average tier 1 city primary school job.

Still looking for answers about the 30 stay stay restriction as well if anyones got some experience on that.

Meaning most people's aversion to the Middle East is because you can't drink any alcohol or have any contact with a girl. But hey, if you never had a drop of alcohol outside of the watchful eye of your parents before you were 18 or 21, I guess such things hold lesser importance for you...

You've got a weird view of the ME based on ignorance. Alcohol is freely available everywhere except SA and Kuwait. There are also plenty of ex-pat women and an active social scene in UAE, Bahrain, Oman and Qatar. Do try to get out a bit more old chap.

Laughing

If you like deserts, camels, and competing with 50 expat guys for one old expat girl (let's face it, hot girls age 18-30 don't wind up in the Middle East), then sure, go right ahead and enjoy your 'active social scene'.

Yet more ignorance, there are plenty of young women in the ME, some are Westerners, often teachers, but there are also many Filipinas and women from MENA. Personally I don't need to compete for women as I've been with the same woman for years but I understand that there are losers who cannot sustain a relationship and constantly need to chase 'girls' who are years younger than themselves. Yes, you are right, there are deserts and camels but there are also beautiful beaches and sparkling coves to visit. Dubai is one of the most modern and exciting cities in the world and Muscat in sleepy Oman is a mix of old and new. Maybe it's better to leave you in a state of blissful ignorance as we don't need bigoted criminals out here so I wouldn't want to encourage you to try it.

State of blissful ignorance? Are you referring to Oregon? And what exactly is a 'sparkling cove'? Sounds like you have been reading too many beer ads. C'mon. Show us a picture! I thought coves were shadowy places with trees.

I spent 6 hours in Dubai Int. airport, transferring en route to Shanghai. Very nice place, as far as airports go.

The wall of heat when walking out to the plane, though? Wow. Never felt anything like it. To be fair, Shanghai in July was nearly as bad.

My friend from Britain has lived in Bahrain for 8 years (not teaching), and he absolutely loves it. Met his now wife there (Irish, early 30s), and the pair of them both like a drink.

I'm in Oman this week, nice cool 30C. Off to Dubai tomorrow for the Rugby 7's, hope it's just as cool there. Sh*t lifestyle isn't it?

Ha! That is monstrously hot for me, as a Brit.

I joke with my students about the heat here. It was 15 degrees yesterday, they were all wearing coats in class. Odd.

I'm slowly acclimatising, I think. I wore a hoody to the shops today. 10 degrees. In Britain, that's still almost t-shirt weather.

I'm a Brit too but like warm weather, 30-35C is my comfort zone. Now humidity is another whole can of worms!
