I still can't believe any of this. Why would the Public Security Bureau even be checking diplomas? That is SAFEA's concern; not the PSB's. The witch hunters raided my school once, but they only cared that we had foreign expert certificates in education.

So, if this is a "false-alarm", why would it benefit someone to make-up the whole story?

Well, that is the million kuai question, but I promise you. Every 'verification' of this story was written by the CFTU (in their various sock puppet guises).

Go to the scam.com site and find the thread for "New World ESL" and you will find the BTV News clip link in there. It is only about 2 minutes long but they show about seven teachers being taken out of a van in handcuffs and walked into a building. They said the teachers would be held in Champing until paying their fines and being deported. It was about 4-5 weeks ago. They also mentioned some recruiters were arrested but no names were given. Maybe you can just Google "China arrests foreign teachers and recruiters in Beijing"

If you guys can read Chinese, search Xinhua.net and they have a small blurb that says 67 foreign teachers in Beijing were arrested for "false documents" in the month of October. Also here are some photos http://www.chinascamwatch.org/warning-.html I wonder if the crackdown is over - at least for the holidays?

What's your point, TB? You continue to spew the same thing over and over again. Don't you know that it is against forum rules to use the forum to spread your own agenda. As the sticky informs everyone: This is not your personal playground.

For the last time, the police only check passports, visas, and expert certificates. They are NOT responsible for authenticating credentials of teachers. In fact, they they are not even responsible for knowing what is required to get a foreign expert certificate in any given occupation. When the witch hunters come to your school, they will be checking for expert certificates and the residence permits to match. THAT IS ALL. THE END.

While all of this is true, as to those officers who are tasked with compliance, there is a division of the Beijing police that deals with fraud and the falsification of any document used to gain a certificate would be criminal.

Its possible they also use "task forces" like we do in the West where different law enforcement agencies and bureaus join forces to focus on a certain mission. They did this before when word got out there was a pedophile on the lose, and again about a year ago when a an expat teacher went missing for a month.

It looks like the witch hunt for illegal alien and fake foreign teachers is now in full swing down in Guangzhou: http://www.shanghaidaily.com/national/Guangzhou-police-intensify-efforts-to-crack-down-on-illegal-foreigners/shdaily.shtml

How is cracking down on illegally working foreigners a "witch hunt"? Should the authorities just allow people to do as they please?

Yes, I suppose you are right Tudor. They legally have no right to be here. I guess the zeal of the hunt is something new in China and I think the government should maybe just make a public announcement through the schools that "We are now going to check the paperwork of every foreign teacher so if you want to avoid arrest and deportation, you have 10 days to voluntarily depart China"

At least this would let about half of the fake teachers who were misled by recruiters know the score, and avoid being tainted for life by a deportation. The other half who knowingly broke the law and deliberately came here on an L,F, or M visa to work, deserve no such consideration or mercy.

Uh, the angry mob bearing pitchforks, pails of hot tar, and bags of feathers gave it away. Wink

Seriously, I agree with Tudor; those found to have broken the law---regardless of their nationality---should pay the consequences. Simple as that; ignorance of the law is never a valid excuse. That's how it is elsewhere in the world---not just in China.
