I'm not on a mission, I like China and the Chinese. All I'm saying is that those who want to teach English in China, especially long term, should be aware of the health risks, which are very real and very considerable.

If you've been in China awhile I can guarantee, 100%, that you've eaten things that you wouldn't have, had you known. Human flesh most closely resembles beef in taste, no one could tell when it's thrown in with a stir fry covered with la jiao and soy sauce. After all, you haven't noticed... :wink:

I'm not trying to prevent anyone from going to China, why would I? The Chinese government estimates that at any given time there is a need for many thousands of additional English teachers, and besides, in my last 2 years there I got out of teaching and was working for Chinese manufacturers in the capacity of technical and marketing liaison--I was even able to accompany them to Russia, Germany and Singapore.

I would however like to see the quality of English teachers in China improve--there are many dedicated and professional teachers working there, but also way too many party boys and misfits!

I may even return, as I've said I like China a lot--but I would limit my physical time in the country to no more than one year, probably 6 months.

I only wanted those in China or planning to go to be aware of the risks posed by the degraded environment and the lax food oversight. Again, Chinese government statistics regarding the negative health effects are pure fiction--EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT.
