| What is a severance letter? |
I don't know what that is, but I always made sure that I got a "letter of employment" if I had been there for more than a year and/or had completed the contract.
Otherwise any future employer won't give you credit for the experience as far as pay.
But perhaps you have only been there for a couple months?

| I have never heard it called that - but the aim is to get a letter stating where and when you worked for the employer. You will then have documentary proof in the future that you taught for that period. It can be important if an employer places you on a scale based on experience. It is also sometimes handy to have a document to prove that you were not actually doing time in the federal slammer in the period in question.. |

| The severance letter is a formal written agreement between you and your soon-to-be-former employer. It lays down when final payments of salary, bonuses, and air fare home will be paid, an agreement to confidentiality on your part, if needed, and some sort of verification you, the departing employee, have returned all items that need to be returned....that sort of thing. It can also be extended to include a confirmation of your employment, your eligibility for rehire, and even what your duties were. There are examples all over the web. |

Is this something done only in Saudi? None of my employers in the rest of the Gulf ever provided such a thing.

I'm thinking the same thing and suspect it's likely more common in western cultures than in the MENA.
If anything, the OP should get an official (signed) employment certificate confirming his/her start and end dates and job title. |

There's something similar in Oman with the MoHE. It's a former that you have to get signed by a million people stating that you've returned all books, equipment, student records etc and that you've provided letters from your bank, landlord, electricity and water companies stating that you have no debts. A sensible person would keep a copy. Only after you provide this do you get your final pay and your educational certificates returned. They're not allowed to hold your passport hostage anymore to stop you doing a runner so they insist on keeping your original certs which has the same effect. |

I remember when I left the Magic Kingdom and before applying for my final exit visa I was requested to provide a kind of "clearance certificate" showing that I have paid all my bills including any rents, utilities bills, telephone/mobile bills, etc. And if you have a car you need to sell your car before you apply for the final exit visa. This "clearance certificate" has to be signed by different people from different compagnies.
The other certificate which I got from my employer is the "work certificate" where it shows my job position and title, start and end dates of employment, etc. Also, before you leave the Magic Kingdom do not forget to obtain the "clearance police certificate" from your local police. |

The police certificate is fairly easy when you are still in KSA. After you leave it would be nigh impossible to get. In some jurisdictions (eg UK) you need documentation like this if you are applying for teaching posts.
Come to think of it I know no one who has returned to teaching in the UK after a stint teaching in KSA ! |

Yes, that is common check-out procedure, but I wouldn't consider it a "severance letter."

Well, I returned to teaching in the UK after stint teaching in the Magic kingdom, and did not provide the Saudi police certificate, but my employer did a criminal record check (CRB check) on my behalf. |

I know one person who did, though the person was very well qualified and experienced. Arrived, did the time, collected the $$$ and left, didn't burn any bridges, achieved objective. Landed a nice number in Scotland I think. |

I think they called it the 'termination form!' Sounds even worse! |
