I was wondering if anyone here has behavioral problems with their students in KSA. I've read quite a bit about the problems people have in their classrooms, as well as the recent problems some foreign nationals are having in the country, and I wondered if there are ever any serious problems in the classroom(i.e. stabbings, shootings, or any sort of physical violence).
Thanks in advance. |

I know a Jordanian teacher of English here, who was punched by a student because he was repeatedly told by the teacher to put his phone away. He was being filmed by the student.
I know an American teacher (who was a linebacker on his university football team) who was also pushed by a student, and he grabbed the student and slammed him into a wall. The student was angry about receiving a zero for not handing in a homework assignment.
Both teachers were deported. The American came back on a different passport.
I personally had a student threaten to shoot me. Reported it to my superiors and nothing was done. The student eventually withdrew from the school.
You can't win in these situations. Best to shrug your shoulders and go out fighting. |

I'm not for special treatment for Americans especially, I think that all should have the same rights. However all he had to do was report it to the police and the student would have spent 2 or 3 days in jail. You can't assault Americans.

Is justice more important or the cash? The cash of course. The students threaten teachers in the United States, and in Britain as well. |

Interesting stories. Are these common occurrences or are they outliers? |

It's unclear why you singled out KSA because these situations occur in other countries as well. |

Probably the OP singled out KSA because he works in KSA. Wild guess. I imagine if he worked in Kuwait, the question would have posted on the Kuwait forum. |

Well, Yasuke, statistically speaking, the classrooms in the Magic Kingdom (both state and private) are much much safer than, for example, classrooms in the USA. The average school shooting in the USA is around one shooting a week since 2012! In the Magic Kingdom the average is near ZERO since the creation of the Magic Kingdom.
Culture of gun violence in the schools of the Magic Kingdom do not exist. Do you know why? Because in the Magic Kingdom there are no gun shops (like in the USA), and the penalty for murder in the Magic Kingdom is a trip to the Chop-Chop square ( I suggest you visit one of these squares to feel the environment of safety in the Magic Kingdom! ).
In a side note, and statistically speaking, you are more likely to die from a car accident in the Magic Kingdom than from a school shooting.
On average, 17 people die on the roads of the Magic kingdom each day, which is one of the highest rate in the world. |

Given the type of questions he's been asking over the past 6 or so months, it's doubtful he's in KSA. |

Seems rather obvious... if you cross a Saudi... hit a Saudi... your chances of being deported are extremely high.
Students can threaten you for any silly purpose that a silly young male student can imagine... pretty much like anywhere. The difference is that in Saudi, there is little you can do about it.

Pretty rare though, isn't it John...
Usually only expats that have been there for many years in jobs with more influence than the average TEFLer.

The teachers were deported because a student didn't like one of them, and the other pushed a student back after he pushed him. Was that not made clear?
A student threatened to shoot me because I asked him what he was doing (he was sitting there with a phone at his desk.). |

Talking to any Saudi student in that manner can get you fired quickly. As annoying as they are with their cheating, if you cause them to lose face they can go to the upper administration bypassing the teaching supervisors and have you gotten rid off. I think if other students witness it, the weak ones will feel almost obligated to join in with the student who doesn't like you and join in with the complaining. That is one of the main problems with the system here. |
