|
|
Hi everybody,
Can anyone tell me what is involved in getting a prescription filled in Mexico City? (I'm still in the U.S. but am wondering in advance of moving.) This would be for a medication I take on an ongoing basis.
Would I need to obtain the same prescription from a Mexican doctor? Or is it somehow possible to have the U.S. prescription filled there?
I have a feeling this is a dumb question... but any clarity you can provide would be appreciated.
Thank you! |

Depends. If it is something like a blood pressure med or something along those lines, chances are if you know the name in Spanish, and the dosage, you can just go to a pharmacy and ask for it. The laws changed a couple or three years ago so that you have to have a prescription for antibiotics, but that is not always enforced. Controlled substances, yeah, pretty much across the board you will have to have one. If you need a prescription from a Mexican doctor, you can go to a Farmacia Similar (they are all over the place) and explain your situation and be on your way in a matter of minutes with a prescription. Also, in Mexico, the pharmacy won´t keep your prescription, so you can just use it again and again. Maybe not forever, but for a long time. A doctor´s visit at a Similar will cost 30 pesos or so. Even a private doctor won´t cost more than 250 or maybe 300 pesos. |

Pharmacy doctors (and there are many chains and independents; Simi isn’t the only one) cost 20 to 30 pesos in my experience.
A clinic I go to charges 100 pesos to see a GP on weekdays within working hours, 150 after hours or weekends and 200 after hours on weekends. Specialists are 500 pesos.
That can give you an idea of budgeting for physician visits.
Pharmacies do take back the prescription for controlled substances, in my experience. |
