| I was just on the Hawthorn Muscat website to check out their information. Is it Hawthorn that interviews at TESOL Arabia only, or do the MOM & MOHE universities also interview at the conference for direct hires? I'm trying to figure out the pluses/minuses of direct hire vs agencies (Yes, I've read all the threads here). Also, on their website they list a MA degree holder as only receiving 75 OMR more. It doesn't seem like a significant amount, but I assume this is standard and acceptable? During the interview process I assume they ask about your preference in location. I'm wondering how successful Hawthorn employees have been in receiving their preferred location. Discuss! |

Sultan Qaboos University conducts in-person interviews at TESOL Arabia. Nearly all the employers at the job fair offer direct-hire opportunities. |

I got my job with Hawthorne through applying directly to them and my interview was conducted via Skype. In regards to the pay difference between MA and non-MA holders, 75 OMR I guess isn't that much, but I'd imagine it would affect your desirability as an applicant. Concerning location preferences, I requested Salalah and got it, but, I regard myself as lucky and Hawthorne made it very clear that your placement will be determined by their requirements at the time. If you get offered a job, I'd probably inform them of a few colleges that you would like to go to, in order of preference, and then hope for the best. If you do get placed somewhere you didn't want to be, I'd probably go there with an open mind and, if it isn't working for you, then request a transfer at the end of the contract, or perhaps even for the next semester. Maravic, who will be your main contact, is very approachable and she will help if she can. Besides, don't forget, from Hawthorne's point of view, they don't want teachers to be unhappy and they want good staff to renew indefinitely so it's in their own interests to listen to teachers' preferences. Oh, dear... Isn't that the same venue they had the last conference in? I heard it was terrible. Especially the job fair, which was really difficult to get to... |

| yes, it was at the Hyatt last year as well. It is too small a venue for such a big event. I didn't attend the job fair portion, but friends said it was on the 22nd floor and only 2 elevators were working/taking people up/down, which made for long waiting queues. |
