To be fair I earn 6k more than that teaching/tutoring at an airline - pilots and foxy cabin crew (wawaweewa!), Four days/week, no weekends.
No poxy co-workers, and no poxy travel (hours and hours at airports, in planes, on trains). 30 minutes to work, 30 minutes back.
Guess I climbed the ladder when the opportunity came.
Oh, and I don't have to read out those poxy questions, and get the standard poxy memorised answers.
Life's on the up, literally. |

| Does anybody know whether all examiners in China are now full-time, or are the BC still offering casual part-time work to examiners? |

Yes, and must also be happy to sign an ambiguous contract written in Chinglish, then act shocked & surprised when the BC shaft you. Then receive more bllsh*t excuses from management & carry on working (no choice really) convinced you still have some dignity. |

Is this in reference to the full-time positions?
I might apply to be a full-time examiner at some point in the future, but I'd like to get a feel of what going full-time is like. There was enough in the way they handled the lead up to cause me concern about being in the first tranche. |

yes - the King did a huge u-turn earlier this week on terms & conditions for people outside the 'BC cities'. (I won't go into details here)
how they're going to cope with people arriving from overseas is beyond me.
you're prudent to bide your time |

I walked away from King and his shadiness.
He lost a lot of good, hard working examiners with his atrocious policies. |

| Thanks for the advice. The posts don't shed the BC in a great light- it sounds like a pretty grave organisation to work for. Happy New Year to all. |
The BC, grave? They are quite serious, but you won't be getting in any time soon without any decent qualifications or experience.
Do a CELTA, work somewhere decent and then have another shot. |

To anyone thinking about joining the BC in China, I suggest you wait. I have been with them, part-time, for several years and I can tell you that they are not to be trusted. On top of that, they are plain and simply inept. The manner in which they are handling this transition is a joke and it really looks like they are making it up as they go along. Nothing will happen to King and his ilk, but the peons always get shafted. Several posters have alluded to this already. Do you really want to be a part of that?
If you really want to be a part of the BC, then wait. Many of us old-timers are smart enough to not buy their line and will be leaving in June. Lot's of newbies will be coming over to China and they have to start a new life as well as being fed, immediately, into the meat grinder that is IELTS testing. See how things shake out with these poor sods before you decide to take the plunge.
Honestly, though, why do you want to do it? The price you will pay in terms of your sanity, private and/or family life, health, etc., will be huge, and there are many other ways to make money here. I have been gradually moving up the food chain (like another poster mentioned) and now no longer need the BC and all the soul-crushing boredom that is IELTS in China. BTW: Factor in the travel time to see how much you really make on a per hour basis. It is not anywhere as good a job as the BC makes it sound and it never has been. You can make the same amount of money elsewhere and with less work.

| My buddy has been working for the British Council for six years out of the Landmark Hotel office as an IELTS examiner and he travels to different parts of China every other week for three day and has blast. He earns almost 50,000 a month doing it. Great job for a single guy who wants to see all the different provinces. |

I’m wondering if anyone here is currently working for them full-time, and if so, how is it going?
In the advertisement on Dave’s ESL Cafe back in November, the start dates that were mentioned were mid-Dec, mid-Jan, mid-Feb, and mid-March. Does anyone know if any of the first three started on time, or at all? |
