hi,
I hear that it is taking 4-5 weeks for the passport renewal.
Is this true in your experience?
I mailed it, but some embassies require people to make an appointment (for the German and maybe Canadian embassies). |

In 2013 I renewed my passport. I went to the consulate in Osaka (made an appointment) and had my new passport less than 2 weeks later. If there's one thing the US Embassies and Consulates do well, it is passport renewals. |

Yes, I was told that but when I checked they had no appointments for two weeks, so I had to mail it.
I should have done it before Christmas but I was busy with work.
The post office gave me a hard time about the postal money order since the address was odd.
My mother had a mild heart attack so that is why I want to get it quickly.
I think passports get mailed to Washington and take time.
Another teacher I know got his back in the mail but it took a month.
The other concern was not being allowed to leave Japan with 90 days or less on the passport. |

Passports applied for overseas generally are issued very quickly - I've never heard of a passport taking 4 weeks unless there were some issues with it.
The actual printing and issuance is done in the US but the time required is rather short.
I checked appointments for Tokyo - ouch! Appointments for Osaka are available whenever (basically). |

Yes you were right.
Got a call yesterday. The embassy is going to mail it.
I think it must be sent in the diplomatic pouch so it gets to Washington quickly. Less than three weeks.
January must be a slow time for them. |
