Hello all

I was just wondering where is the best place to search for jobs in unis in Taiwan, or maybe it's best to contact them directly? Also, would the intructor require an MA/PhD, if so does the qualification have to be English/TESOL related? Is it true that in between semesters there are several month of 'vacation time' or would the instructor still have to be in and around the uni with research obligations? How much admin is usually required? What's typically the best time of year to look for openings? I spotted a couple of blogs on this but I'm not sure how up to date they are. Thanks for any help you can give, cheers.

I've taught part time at a University, but if you want a full time job I'm pretty sure you'll need a MA/PhD in a related field. Those jobs are pretty hard to come by and I think it really comes down to who you know. I've heard of people in rural Taiwan getting jobs without those qualifications, but I think it's very rare unless you know the right people and come highly recommended.

But you could always try and see.

Just got back this week from a visit to Taipei, hanging out with friends who teach at a couple of universities there. They indicated that Taiwan's population crash is leading to a consolidation among colleges/universities with several thousand university teaching positions certain to be lost. So, to be honest, this might not be the right time to go there looking for a college position.

That being said, I did meet one new guy teaching at a college, but he has a Ph.D. and a decent publication record.

My impression has always been your rank-and-file foreign ESL instructor will teach little children in Taiwan, or teenagers at best. Good luck with that. Have you got an M.A. or PhD?
