				| Hello, for current teachers in Japan, I have a question for you. Does Japan require you to have a health check in order to get a work permit? Do they screen for HIV, like they do in South Korea, Taiwan and China? I have searched and searched the internet and I cannot find very much information on a required health check in order to get a work permit. Any comments would be appreciative. Thanks | |

I don't believe there is a required health exam for a work visa. Some employers might require it (e.g., the JET Program does), but I believe most don't.

				| I echo rtm and Pitaro, here. A health check is not needed for the visa, but some employers want one. The ones I have had didn't require bloodwork, but had an overall physical and urine sample to test for sugar levels.
One requested a lung X-ray to show an absence of tuberculosis.

				| It's actually a legal requirement for employers to provide a basic health check or offer to arrange one (and contribute/pay for it) each year for every employee.
It's one of those laws that good companies follow but others ignore. Local ward/city health offices are meant to follow up as a report should be submitted each year, but few do hence companies can get away with not providing medicals.
