Hi Everyone -
Help! I'm from the U.S. and I'm in the midst of gathering information about where I might like to apply for jobs abroad. However, I do have a couple health concerns and prescription medicines that I'm concerned about and I'm wondering if this will keep me from moving abroad.
I am taking natural desiccated thyroid medication (Armour Thyroid) that I know is very difficult to get prescribed outside of the US. Also, I'm taking a compounded bio-identical hormone (progesterone and estradiol) medication, too.
How do people deal with prescription medications when thinking about or moving abroad? Thank you for your help and any tips that you may have! |

I think what people do is they check whether the medications they need are available in the places they are thinking about going. In some places in the world, many medications that are available only with a prescription in the US are available over the counter.
Another option is to see whether your doctor in the US will write you a longer-term prescription (say, a year) that you can fill all at once. You might be able to take a year's supply with you.
If your doctor will write you ongoing prescriptions without seeing you, you might be able to have them sent to you by a family member or an online/mail-order pharmacy. |

Thanks, Rtm - great tips there I hadn't thought about getting a year-long prescription! Yes, I think my doctor should be able to do that - he is very accommodating! Thank you! |

| Make sure you also carry a prescription for the generic drug name because foreign pharmacies aren't always familiar with a drug's proprietary name. |

Thanks, Nomad Soul! Good point. Unfortunately, for me, there aren't generic versions of these medications. It's a bummer.  However, I think I could get my doctor to order year-long prescriptions...maybe. I'll have to see. Thanks! |
