Hi all,

I have sixteen years teaching experience, a DipTESOL and a PGCE and I'm interested in the possibility of getting an international school job.

The issue is my PGCE, it is for post-compulsory and does not have QTS. Would that close the door to international school jobs?

ps After eight years on the Hong NET Scheme, the bright lights of Bangkok don't really appeal to us, so we'd be happy anywhere there is a small city with adequate medical facilities.

Cheers,

Tim

ps Could you recommend a good recruiter for somebody at my stage of career?

Without QTS your not going to do much better than the next EFL grunt on the ground until you land and make some connections. Those "premium" jobs are found through who you know and who knows you and you need to be "on the ground" for them.

The "better" international schools won't recruit you (but you may get a temp job as a fill-in for a no-show till someone better comes along if you are at the right place and the right time.

Skip the idea of "recruiter" for Thailand.

Either go with one of the international recruiters and job fairs:
IBO, Search Associates (you just missed their big job fair), www.tes.co.uk/jobs , international Schools review, etc. or land and pound the pavement.

suphanburi,

This is what I thought, so I've taken steps to get QTSLS with what was once the IFL.

Many thanks for your honest reply,

Tim

Sorry but you are not getting into Patana, NIST or ISB without QTS guys, unless you know someone or have extensive IB experience and qualifications.

Either do what you need to do to get QTS, get IB exp. or try one of the mid-range Inter schools. Lots of them have campuses in Korat area or outskirts of Bangkok now. A couple good ones up in Chiang Mai. They wont have the same standard as top International schools but pay will be decent for Thailand (60-90K/month)

If you can teach maths/science/computers, you have a better shot a finding work and getting better pay.

How do people in Thailand afford to pay for a PGCE. The Sunderland costs 6000GBP. Are there any schools whıch help pay for this?

If you have QTS and a couple of years under your belt then 6000 pounds is merely an investment and you should be looking at jobs paying in the 100k thb + range.

Search associates has a big job fair in January for qualified teachers.
