I am a 49 year old American English teacher with an MA TESOL, CELTA, 20 years teaching experience (mostly at the tertiary level), but NO US/UK public school certification. What is the job market like in Cambodia in general for someone with my background and age? What sort of salary can I expect to earn and would my age be a major road block to employment. Finally, would IELTS tester training/certification help in the Khmer market? If so where can I get trained in Phnom Phen?

You have solid qualifications, probably in the top 1% of "teachers" in Cambodia. Unfortunately, they don't really count for much in a country where the private schools only care about paying teachers the lowest possible salary acceptable in the market. Most ESL teachers start out at $10-12/hour; there is little room for promotions/raises.

The good jobs are not in ESL but in curriculum. Can you teach things like literature, poetry, creative writing? You could probably land a good job with one of the few reputable international schools in Phnom Penh if you could.

If you are strictly an ESL teacher and are interested in living in SEA, consider Vietnam where the salaries are double what they are in Cambodia and Thailand. I gather with your experience you'd be fine teacher non-ESL English. Check out the international schools. They start hiring in July/August. Gotta be right place, right time.

I have taught history here for 3 years and am from Long Island as well (Lindenhurst) if you have any questions feel free to PM me.
