Job transfer is looking more real and by end April I may be moved... bit now the powers that be are split between his position being in Sydney or Singapore. I can only imagine that my job prospects in Oz would be disappointing so I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed! Singapore also sounds a lot more interesting.... |

Not from SA, just expatting here, but that has happened to teachers I worked with in Turkey too because they weren't Muslim. No one can tell me the US is the most racist country in the world…. |
Sorry, I understand that you are talking about "discrimination" here, but it at least sounds like you are confusing or conflating discrimination based on religion with that based on race.
Islam is not about race, and in fact is one of the most, probably the most, racially inclusive and egalitarian religions in the world. But I think you were just comparing discriminatory practices in renting apartments in one country (based on religion) with those in another country (based on race), which is fair game, minus the confusion. |

Teacherchick, let us know how you go. As for Sydney, I used to work there and found good ESL work fairly easily. |

@mysterytrain…. you are absolutely right, I was just meaning discriminatory practices overall, and I suppose there are different reasons, practices, and thoughts on the issue. Sorry about that.
@singaporehabib : looking more like Sydney, we will know by the end of this week. Not sure how I feel about this, as I am sure that my qualifications in Oz will not be as good as Singapore. Thinking about taking time to get a Masters if we end up there. I don't particularly want to, but I do want a full time job eventually |

I expect that such differences do, in fact, exist. I certainly agree that discrimination in rental housing based on either race or religion is unfortunate, though I'm sure those who do so find justification for it somehow. No worries, best of luck in Sydney or Singapore. |
