About six months ago I applied for a job with Hamspon English in Beijing and I gave a 30 minute demo class. Then we haggled about the salary and I decided not to take the job because they only wanted to pay 200 an hour and 8 hours per week. I wanted 250 an hour and full time.

But 10 days ago they called and said they had an urgent FT opening and agreed that they would pay me the 250 I wanted if I came in and gave another demo class for IELTS at a different location in Fuchengmen. So I asked why I had to give another demo class and Alice told me because the manager at the other location never met me and had to approve me. I agreed thinking it would be another 30 minute demo.

I guessed wrong. She insisted I do a full two hour demo with a "staff evaluator", who I later learned was a paying student. I kept quiet and asked when I would start the new job. She said "Maybe in April or May" she would give me call. Did I get used or what guys?

Yes, you got used. It's a regular occurrence throughout all of China. You can't trust anyone period. I've taken on part-time gigs both assuming and also agreeing on a price, but then later told it was a demo. Again, I would advise you or any other newbies coming here, don't trust anyone unless you get it in writing. Even then, they can still twist things around to their benefit.

Cheers,

Aaron

Both times they said the demo class was "just fine" and what does "urgent FT opening" mean to you? To me it means "right after the Spring Break". They just needed someone to teach that VIP IELTS student, I'm sure. But isn't Hampson English supposed to be a respectable brand in Beijing? I'm so pissed I could chew nails right now just thinking about it. And to think I traveled all the way from Jinsong to go there on six hours advance notice!

If they offer you the job say thanks and don't show up.

Now you are even.
