I got an email in Chinese with English titles from SAFEA after I registered for a job fair a while ago and now I guess I am on their mailing list. Anyway it warns against letting anyone in China "hold" your passport or make copies of it. It says the real danger is "latent identity theft". How do you avoid not giving your passport to people when you work internationally? All the links they give are in Chinese and wonder why the *beep* they send foreigners stuff in Chinese in the first place ?!? http://scam.com/showthread.php?t=644413

I answered this post a couple days ago when it was on page one and someone deleted my answer. Why? I think this topic is important for two reasons:

1) A lot of employers hold you hostage by holding on to your passport and some even say they need it in the office for "random inspections"

2) There is a shitload of identity theft going on in China and the fewer people that get your passport information, the better.
