Interesting timing with this article on the Beeb. So shortly after British fans did themselves proud in Paris...

There's no such animal. Each constituent country of the UK has its own football association, and there's no "British" team.
"British fans" is a term used by the BBC back in the 70s and 80s whenever English fans misbehaved. When Scottish fans misbehaved, they were Scottish. The usual BBC double standard. |

Dear grahamb,
What? No quadruple standard? Welsh fans? Northern Irish fans?
Regards,

Of course there is! Every country has a national team that competes in the World Cup, drawn from the best players of that nationality, regardless of what team they normally play for. Of course, there is not a British team, but an English team, so maybe that is what you meant. |

Dear BadBeagleBad,
Unless I'm missing grahamb's point, I think you're missing grahamb's point.
His point, maybe: when "English" fans misbehave, they are called "British" fans; when Scottish fans misbehave, they are not called "British" fans, but "Scottish" fans.
But hey, maybe I'm wrong.
Regards,
John |

Dear Johnslat
I believe Northern Ireland is part of the UK, but not of Great Britain.
Or is it the other way round? Something about those Channel Islands too, hic!
With Communist greetings

No, I meant what I said. As far as international football is concerned, the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish football associations are members of FIFA, and their teams participate in the World Cup, although they rarely qualify for the final stages. The English team represents England and England alone. It's not rocket science.
Sasha is correct regarding Northern Ireland. For that reason the UK is "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland." |

They were Chelsea fans, I believe. Yet, they were still British, as well as English... Though to call them 'fans' seems more inappropriate than calling them 'British'.
Mind-boggling stuff. |
