To get a direct hire job you pretty much need a Master's degree. I know that online degrees are not really accepted, but I know some friends got hired from Universities with online degrees from places like the University of Phoenix. I was thinking about getting a Master's degree from Malaysia(hybrid online program) while working in Saudi Arabia. I would've gotten a Master's degree from the US, but universities are quite expensive, and my Bachelor's cost a fortune. So I'm weighing whether I should attempt to get a Master's degree from Malaysia, or possibly Spain. I'm not sure if it will be worth anyvalue in Saudi Arabia. Has anyone completed a Master's degree from the non anglo universities? And does anyone know if a degree from Malaysia would be accepted? Thanks in Advance. |

I can't comment on your friends' situations because it's unknown what their full qualifications are or if they're trying to pull one over on you. But in your situation, you're taking a big gamble that Saudi employers (particularly direct hire) will be interested in a US citizen with a degree that 1) is from a non-English speaking country; and 2) obviously entailed online coursework. It very likely will end up being a costly mistake in terms of money and time. |

Most employers in KSA will give no credence or value to a Malaysian MA. Ditto for one from Spain. |

My Foreign Master's is from an accredited State university system in the U.S.. It was returned unsigned from the Saudi Cultural Mission. |

Funny. On my first and only contract in Saudi the lead idiot at the client's school asked me to meet him. He asked if I had a Masters. I responded that I did. He asked if it was from an online school. I responded that it was not so he asked where it was from. I told him the London School of Economics. He said he had never heard of it so it was probably an online school. Mercifully he then changed the subject else I might have ended up in chop chop square. |

Clearly a fly-by-night online diploma mill--like MIT, Oxford, Yale . . . |

Now they probably would say, "Oh! It's good enough for Saif Gaddafi, but you must be rich and bought yours, too." |

Reminds of of a colleague whose Norwegian immigrant father--a farmer in rural Washington state--discouraged him from accepting a scholarship to Harvard's MBA program, saying "I've never heard of Harvard. I don't think it's a very good school. Besides, you can get a great education at the University of Puget Sound." |

One of my friends has an MA in Contemplative Education from Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, and has been "contemplating" teaching in KSA. He asked me if it would be considered a relevant degree. Frankly, I have no clue and told him to apply to TEFL ads and see what happens. |

Unless his degree included a concentration in TESOL (which I doubt), I hope he has plenty of time to contemplate rejection letters. In all fairness, Naropa is a very good school, especially in the arts, Buddhist philosophy, and peace and justice studies. But, based on what I've read here, I don't think any of that will be terribly useful in KSA. |

I lived in Boulder years ago, and yes, there are lots of highly-educated residents with that "look."
Peace out. |
