See the thread on Yangshuo in Guangxi ; Guilin is relatively small too , and has some interesting features.
Zhuhai in Guangdong may be worth considering: though it has no cultural heritage to speak of , it does have a certain vibe, and it's only a brisk walk across the border to Macau.

I found work in summer in a small town, but the school could not sustain me during term time.

You may want to define what you consider interesting.

What's a small town? To some Chinese people a small town might mean several hundred thousand people. It takes a certain amount of population to fund a foreign teacher.

'Small town' employers probably wouldn't have the right to hire FTs, so you have visa problems right there.
Do the small town thing as a summer gig but have your legit Z visa via your regular employer.
That's the best of both worlds.
I did 6 weeks in a small town in Liaoning in 2004 and enjoyed it immensely.
That said, my visa was courtesy of my Dalian uni employer.

A few years ago I worked in a "small town" of about a million people.
Two foreigners, and a million Chinese.

Any woman that dared to speak to me in public was harassed and labelled as a prostitute or traitor. Nope, don't want to ever experience that again.
