I really like the way they build in Japan, though I think they could find some better materials to build with.
Now here's a poll. Let's play. You can be in any country to play in this poll. Do construction workers whistle at you? And if so, do you like it?
They whistle at me, and I must confess I like it.
Please add any comments if necessary.
You can also be of any race to participate in this poll.
Peace!

In the States, yes, and depending on my mood I either like it or want to hurl bricks at them.

Here, no. The only time I see construction workers is from my car, though.

On a mildly related note, one day as I was walking home from school in California a couple of years ago, two guys in a truck passed me in the opposite direction. Just as they passed me, they held up a sign that read, "show us your t*ts." Had I not been so shocked & been able to react more quickly, I might have obliged just to see their reaction. Reflecting on it later that day, I almost died laughing.

Be careful, you can get stalkers this way, who you can later have your friends drop off at Wal-Mart and leave them there.
Er, don't ask me how I know. Wink

The difference in attitude most men and women have about being whistled at by the opposite sex is funny. Long ago on one hot summer afternoon, I was walking hunched over down the street to my friend's house to go swimming in his pool. Even though it was a sunny day, I was feeling blue under the clear blue sky. Then a car drove by with four woman in it. I don't remember how they looked but I will always remember what they did and then the expression on their face. They whistled at me, maybe to mock me since I was wearing a very short swim suit. But when they saw me straighten up with my shoulders back and a smile of pride, they all smiled and waved. Knowing they had made someone happy. I waved back smiling to show my appreciation of thanks. It made my day, and probably week.

Are you saying that being mocked makes you happy?

No not at all! I was happy because a bunch of women thought I was attractive enough to whistle at. Razz They might of at first were trying to mock me, I don't know. But when they saw they had a positive effect, they also smiled with joy. The message I was trying to give is that making someone else happy will also make you happy!

Soooooo...

construction workers who whistle
guys in cars with crude signs that ask me to reveal part of my anatomy
the plumber who ask me out after I gave him my phone # to update me on the status of my toilet
the weird stalker man who got my friend's address from her driver's license
etc., etc., etc.

are trying to make us HAPPY?!?!?

Honestly, I am a decent-looking gal, and I get complimented regularly by friends and complete strangers, but it has never once occurred to me that anyone who solicited me while I was walking past them or when I was a customer paying for a (completely unrelated!) service from them gave even a moment's consideration to whether or not their actions would make me happy.

Maybe you're just more optimistic than me.

My two cents doesn't have to do with whistling Japanese construction workers, but rather, very loud Spanish firefighters. I lived in Granada, Spain last year and I was going to the Sunday market. I was standing there at the bus stop and I hear this loud honk. Before I know it 4 guys, hanging out a firetruck, were whistling and yelling "GUAPA!!" (cutie) at me. It was pretty embarrassing. What made it worse was that 5 minutes later they turned around and came back, doing the same exact thing only this time they honked incessantly. As if that weren't enough, they turned right back around and made all that commotion yet a third time. Yea, that was a unique experience...

BTW, I get whistled at, and those OHHHHH soooo gross stares (EWWWW!), by construction workers and I hate it.

Basically, it makes me feel like a piece of meat to be whistled/yelled at based on my looks. As a woman, I would never do that to a man I thought was attractive, although I might give him a second glance, but not stare at him.

But I do have to be honest- I would be flattered somewhat if I thought the guy yelling at me was attractive, whereas I would be more apt to be disgusted if I thought the guy yelling was not attractive.

So I guess I have a double-standard about the acceptability of being treated like a piece of meat...

Melirae and Denise

Just curious, you ever been to those female-only, male stripper gigs where the beefcake takes his clothes off in front of 30 screaming women? My wife said she went to one in Australia and they had a male stripper for a friends wedding shower.

Just wonder if girls whistle at the guys at those things, and do they really take it all off?

In Costa Rica on Laides Night at the bars women are segregated from the men until a certain time. On the side of the bar where the women are, there is an assortment of male dancers who are dressed in cheesy matching outfits up on a stage and they do shed some clothes, but not all. This is the only experience I have had with anything close to male stripping. And yes, I did a little yelling, but they were hot and there for my enjoyment!

When I am walking down the street, I am not there for the enjoyment of the construction workers, so therein lies the difference for the acceptability of being yelled at by strangers.
<---my comment to keep my post on topic. Very Happy

No, I haven't, but I agree with Melirae: In such an environment, the dancers (male or female, with a male or female audience) are there for the purpose of entertaining the customers. Women walking down a street are there for the purpose of going somewhere; we are NOT entertainers. If I want a guy to whistle at me, I will get myself all dolled up and go out to a nightclub.

I can not stand it when men whistle or when they shout stuff at me. Gardeners, construction, workers, etc. Do they really think that by saying "hola guapa" or singing that I am really going to stop and talk to them! Rolling Eyes By them saying or staring it makes me feel gross. Such dirty men out there I tell you. If they really want someone to stop and talk to them I would recommend a different approach. Funny thing that happened to me once in a local pharmacy is this Brazilian guy started following me around the store. I finally got rid of him by going to the condom aisle picking up a huge box of condoms and proceeded to the cash register. The guy gave me a look of digust and left the store. I just laughed. Laughing Being female is awesome but it doesn't give you all the freedoms of men. I work out and I can say I am fit. I really have to sometimes think about my outfits before I go out by myself because I don't want the attention. I am just glad to hear other ladies are having the same issues.

In my case, I think the women in the car were at first trying to mock me, but then saw that I took being wristled at as a compliment so they smiled too. Because making someone happy is a better feeling than getting someone mad.

Of course if you don't like men wristling at you then men souldn't wristle at you. One person could take the same action as an insult and another could take it as a complement. One time three women friends were talking bad about a bar in Hawaii, because all night long guys kept trying to pick them up. I agreed with them about the bar. They all looked bewildered and said in a state of shock, "But usually guys like that!" I then admitted, "Yea! And all night long women did not try to pick me up."
