It's right in the city centre near to the airport. It has been developed massively over the last few years and is becoming the new Ruwi for the relatively more prosperous Indians. |

Well, you're right about the development part but it is easily 85-90% populated by middle class Omanis. It is the suburb after the airport, south of the beach and al hail area. majority residential, some commercial / shopping areas, new mosques, several new schools, connected to the expressway after SQU in Al khoudh.
I would most of mawaleh, houses, buildings etc. are 5-6 years old or less. |

So is south mawaleh far from the center of the city of Muscat ?
Are there gyms, movie theaters, shopping malls and beaches nearby ?
Is it difficult to find taxis in that area ? |

I lived in Mawaleh for two years before moving to neighboring Al Khoud. It's quite conveniently located, but traffic is getting heavier and heavier as more houses/flats are being built. Things have changed a lot just in the short time that I've been here.
I agree with the poster who said that it is full of primarily middle class Omanis. For me, this has been part of its appeal. Also there is very nice mosque (Mazoon Mosque) which serves as a landmark for taxi drivers in case you're ever lost and unsure where to direct them.
During the school year, many Sultan Qaboos University students (males) are housed in Mawaleh and Al Khoud areas, adding to the heavy traffic dilemma. Other than that, I would say the area is quite comfortable and peaceful. Just my two cents worth... |
