It's alright, the accommodation is nice as is the campus. Money is a bit better there than other universities locally. It's a private university but I found the students to be generally pleasant and hard working.
Living in Henan comes with its own challenges so it is how you would cope living in Henan rather than working at the university which is a reasonable place to work, though I have heard they insist on compulsory English corners, so if you can sack those off (unless you like doing English corners of course) then it would be alright for a year or two.
As for Shangqiu, I have heard it has changed a lot in the last few years, for the better! Just as well haha! |

Yes, thank you. The email just says "Shangqiu University in Henan" but when I look online I get Shangqiu Normal University. Are these the same place? Also the email says it's a public university, so my same question again. |

Oh right - The institution formerly named 'Huyau College' is now Shangqiu University and was accredited by Henan Agricultural University though it might now be a public university. Shangqiu Normal University is a separate institution.
Here is the website for Shangqiu University.

I was there for a year, but at Shangqiu Normal University - but also we met an English teacher who was teaching at Shangqiu University.
It seem there are good and bad, in both schools. SQNU is public university, it's in town, very easy to get in downtown but SQU is a bit far off, i remember my teacher friend from SQU had to take a taxi to party with us at home party at SQNU campus and couldnt get back to SQU, ended up stay a night because there was also curfew and hard to get a taxi back anyway.
but SQU is more modern, also teacher's housing is more modern as well, comparing with SQNU - our housing is like just popped out from communist party's house 30 yrs ago.
Anyway, students at SQNU - just like other normal university, students are motivated, love to study and study very hard I still remember and miss it so much,it's fun talking with them at English corner (at that time i kind of hate it but now missing how good English they are!) students come and help me with shopping ,they came to assist me even at the salon!
But SQU might be a bit different, since students are richer, many might find they do not have to study hard for life.
Shangiu city is - pretty poor city ,downside is undeveloped and dirty but in another side people are very friendly, since there are not many expats they are very friendly and super excited sometimes ( take photos/ shouting and calling friends to look at expats)
You can PM me for more info i also have lots of photos and also some teacher friends who are still there as well. hope it helps!
PS. I am a Thai wife of an American teacher who was there. |
